Flemer, Isotopes Down Chihuahuas 5-4

The Isotopes (65-68) survived a ninth inning scare and hung on to defeat the El Paso Chihuahuas 5-4 from Isotopes Park on Saturday night. The victory moves the Isotopes back to within 4.5 games of the first place Chihuahuas.

The Chihuahuas struck first on Nick Noonan's solo home run in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead over the Isotopes. Isotopes pitching would then go on to retire 23 El Paso batters in a row. The Albuquerque pitching staff has now gone 32.2 innings without issuing a walk.

Albuquerque starter Matt Flemer was dominant after allowing the home run. The 25-year-old allowed just the one run on two hits over seven innings on the hill, walking none, and striking out five. Flemer has allowed just one run over his last two starts.

The Isotopes would go on to erase the Chihuahuas 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Brandon Barnes delivered an RBI single to left.

Albuquerque would go on to take the lead in the sixth inning when Mike Tauchman delivered his first home run of the season, a solo shot that just cleared the right field wall. It was the outfielder's first home run since April 27, 2015, logging 893 at bats without clearing the fence.

Tauchman's home run extended his hitting streak to 15 games, a career-high. He has now matched Tom Murphy for the longest hitting streak of the season for Albuquerque.

The Isotopes would go on to plate three insurance runs in the eighth inning which would turn out to be vital to the outcome of the ball game. Tom Murphy came through with an RBI double, Chris Nelson knocked home a run on a pinch-hit single, and Raimel Tapia delivered a sacrifice fly in the frame.

After a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen from Simon Castro, the Chihuahuas would go on to plate three in the ninth inning against Brian Schlitter. With the tying run on first base and two outs, Hector Sanchez lined a ball in the left-center field gap. Isotopes center fielder Raimel Tapia laid out to make the game-saving catch and preserve the win for the Isotopes.

The Isotopes and Chihuahuas wrap up their five-game set tomorrow evening from Isotopes Park. Left-hander Kyle Freeland will get the start for Glenallen Hill's squad. El Paso manager Rod Barajas will counter with right-hander Walter Locket. First pitch in the regular season home finale is set for 6:05 p.m.
