Kernels Score Early as LumberKings Drop Season High Fourth Straight

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - After having scored in six separate innings on Friday night, the Cedar Rapids Kernels got four runs in the first two innings, and quelled a LumberKings rally in the sixth that could have potentially tied the game. Cedar Rapids added three runs late, extending the lead to 7-2 and winning by that final. The Kernels have won six straight, while the LumberKings have lost a season high four in a row.

The Kernels picked up where they left off last night due to an uncharacteristic first inning from Nick Neidert. He walked leadoff man Casey Scoggins on five pitches, and on an 0-1 pitch, he hit second place hitter Brandon Lopez. Luis Arraez then bunted with the intent to sacrifice, but beat out the throw to first, loading the bases with nobody out. Zander Wiel then bopped a single to shallow center, scoring Scoggins to get the Kernels on the board, but keeping the bases loaded. From there, Neidert bore down and got the next three in order to end the inning.

However, the Kernels would make a big dent in the scoreboard against Neidert in the top of the second. Rainis Silva singled to center with one out, and after Neidert punched out Casey Scoggins, Brandon Lopez poked one just inside the first base line. It went for a double, and moved Silva to third. Luis Arraez then flew a ball to left that just got over the head of left fielder Ivan Gonzalez and hitting the warning track. It went for a double and scored both base runners, extending the Kernels lead to 3-0. Zander Wiel then followed with a single that scored Arraez, and the score would be 4-0 Kernels after an inning and a half.

The LumberKings though were far from finished. Alex Jackson singled with one out in the second, and came home on a double from Arturo Nieto that one hopped to the center field wall, getting the LumberKings on the board. Nick Neidert retired the side in order in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, keeping the score at 4-1 Cedar Rapids.

Clinton's best chance to tie the game would come in the bottom of the sixth, as Chris Mariscal started the inning with a bunt single. Kernels starter Sam Gibbons (7-5) then jammed Ricky Eusebio inside but he chopped it through the hole in the left side, going for a single and moving Mariscal up to second. Dalton Kelly then lined one right off Gibbons' right thigh, defecting directly to third and allowing Kelly to reach and loading the bases. Logan Taylor then grounded one in the hole at short, and while Brandon Lopez prevented it from going into the outfield, it scored Mariscal and kept the bases loaded, cutting the Cedar Rapids lead to 4-2. Alex Jackson came up next, but he grounded one right back to Gibbons, who fired home for the first out and Rainis Silva turned it to first for the double play. Gus Craig couldn't get the two runners left on as grounded out to first to end the inning.

Cedar Rapids would get a run in the eighth and two in the ninth, extending their lead to 7-2, and the LumberKings had no life left in the tank offensively, managing just one hit in the last three innings.

The LumberKings hope to break their four game losing streak tomorrow in a day game battler with the Kernels. Pablo Lopez (6-0, 2.24) takes the ball for Clinton, while Cedar Rapids counters with Brady Anderson (2-0, 1.57). First pitch is at 2 PM, and you can get your tickets by calling 563-242-0727, visiting www.lumberkings.com, or by stopping by the box office at Ashford University Field.
