Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

NORWICH, CT --- Sam Machonis smacked a three-run homer, Will Savage collected two triples and Mario Sanjur went 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Connecticut Tigers to an 11-2 New York-Penn League win over the Vermont Lake Monsters Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.

The Tigers snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly from Sanjur for the second out of the inning. Machonis followed with a line drive shot that curved around the leftfield foul pole for the three-run homer and a 5-1 Connecticut lead.

Connecticut added another run in the fifth for a 6-1 advantage before Vermont got the run back in the sixth on a JaVon Shelby RBI double. But the Tigers plated four more runs in the seventh, including a Savage two-run triple and Sanjur RBI single for a 10-2 lead.

The 11 Tiger runs mark the eighth time Vermont has allowed 10 or more runs in a game, including fourth time to the Tigers and the 3rd time in five games played at Connecticut. The Lake Monsters also allowed a season-high 16 hits for the third time, all coming against the Tigers.

Vermont's Tyler Ramirez went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs, including a triple and run scored on a Eric Marinez sacrifice fly in the second inning for an early 1-0 Lake Monsters lead. Nick Collins was 2-for-3 with a walk, while Nate Mondou was 1-for-4 with a walk and is now hitting .332 overall. Ivan Andueza (2-3) allowed five runs on seven hits over four innings for the loss, while reliever Tyler Painton five runs on seven hits over three innings.

Reliever Jordan Smith (3-1) allowed one run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts over three innings to earn the win for Connecticut (37-30), while Daniel Pinero went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and two RBI.

The loss dropped the Lake Monsters record to 24-43 overall, the fourth time in the last five years that Vermont has lost 43 games (42 loss in 2015). The Lake Monsters and Tigers will wrap up the series at Connecticut Sunday at 4:05 pm before Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against Tri-City beginning on Monday.
