Norfolk Tides News Release

Caleb Joseph plated Mike Yastrzemski with a one-out single in the bottom of the 14th inning, lifting Norfolk to a 7-6 win over the Charlotte Knights Friday night at Harbor Park.

With the score knotted at 6-6, Yastrzemski ignited the game-winning rally by working a one-out walk from Tyler Barnette (1-2) before moving to second on a wild pitch. Joseph then lined a single to left field, with Yastrzemski just beating the tag of catcher Kevan Smith to give Norfolk the walk-off win in the series opener.

Joseph and his brother, Corban, both drove in two in the win as Norfolk pulled to within 3.5 games of Gwinnett for first place in the IL South division. It was the eighth walk-off win of the season for Norfolk and the second walk-off win for the Tides in extra-innings this homestand.

Oliver Drake (1-4) earned the win after striking out a pair in a scoreless inning of relief. Norfolk's bullpen allowed one run and struck out 11 over 10.1 innings of work, including two shutout innings of relief from infielder Ozzie Martínez in his first professional pitching appearance.

The Tides had trailed the contest 5-0, as the Knights plated two runs in the second inning before hitting two homers in the third to claim an early lead. Norfolk answered back with three runs in the third frame before taking the lead in the seventh with three more runs, but Charlotte knotted the contest at 6-6 in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Nicky Delmonico.

The two clubs will continue their series Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. David Hale (3-8, 5.95) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Chris Volstad (8-10, 4.26).

Saturday is Fan Appreciation Night at Harbor Park, with thousands of fans winning prizes throughout the game. There will also be a postgame fireworks show, with several fans winning tickets to see Heart, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Cheap Trick at Veterans United Home Loans Ampitheater in Virginia Beach on September 13. Gates open at 4 pm for a special Battle Of The Bravest charity softball game. The Chesapeake Fire Department and Virginia Beach Fire Department will square off at Harbor Park, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting MDA.

Notes: After stranding a man on base in the fourth inning, Richard Rodriguez has now stranded 24 of 30 runners he's inherited this season...Each of Charlotte's runs was scored with two outs...Christian Walker had two hits and has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, batting .340 (16-47) over that stretch...Trey Mancini had three hits and an RBI...Zach Phillips allowed one run over two innings of relief, snapping an 11-game scoreless stretch.
