RailHawks Fly North to Take on New York

North Carolina FC News Release


The Carolina RailHawks (7W-5D-7L; 26 pts; 6th place) travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on the New York Cosmos (12W-2D-6L; 38 pts; 2nd place) on Saturday, August 27. The RailHawks return to Shuart Stadium after falling 1-0 to the reigning NASL Champion on May 1. Yohandry Orozco scored the only goal of the game in the 45th minute. The match was a tight one, as possession favored New York just 51.6 percent to Carolina's 48.4 percent.

Last Time Out The RailHawks out-possessed, out-shot and out-scored the NASL Spring Season Champion Indy Eleven in an exciting match at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, August 27. Indy struck first in the 19th^ minute when Greg Janicki headed in a cross. Matt Fondy quickly found the first equalizer of the night just three minutes later. Indy pulled ahead again when Drew Beckie was called for a foul in the box. Eamon Zayed stepped up to take the penalty kick and put his team back on top. Carolina's Steven Miller kept the RailHawks in the game when the defender volleyed a deflected cross past Indy keeper Jon Busch. His goal would be the catalyst for Carolina's comeback victory. In stoppage time, a handball in Indy's box resulted in a penalty kick for the home team. Mexican International Omar Bravo stepped up to take the shot, and easily converted to earn the 3-2 win.

Players to Watch: Carolina RailHawks #31 Steven Miller Miller scored his first goal for the club on Saturday, August 20 against Indy Eleven, helping the team defeat the NASL Spring Season Champion 3-2. He was named to the NASL Team of the Week for Week Six after an impressive performance in Jacksonville, including an assist to Mexican International Omar Bravo, on August 6. Miller has only played in five out of 18 games this season. The defender returned to the field on July 9 after a head injury kept him out of the entire spring season. Despite his setback, Miller has shown incredible determination and perseverance to get back on the field and contribute to the RailHawks success. He was also named to the Team of the Week for Week 8 after scoring his first goal against Indy Eleven last Saturday. Number 31 had the most touches on the field in the match against Indy Eleven with 87 touches in 90 minutes.

New York Cosmos #18 Juan Arango Arango is an experienced midfielder with plenty left in his tank. At 36 years old, he is Venezuela's all-time leader in appearances (127) and goals (23). The Venezuelan International is tied for New York's leading scorer with seven goals this season. The midfielder has started all 19 matches this season, clocking the most minutes on the team with 1,608. Not only is Arango at the top of the league stats in goals, but he is also in the top 10 for shots and assists. Number 18 will be a strong presence in the middle of the field and will pose a test for Carolina center midfielders Nazmi Albadawi and Matt Watson.

Coming Up Next: The RailHawks host the Jacksonville Armada (3W-8D-10L; 17 pts, 11th place) at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 3. The game will be broadcast live on WRAL2, TWC SportsChannel and ESPN3.

Bravo, Miller Named to Team of the Week Defender Steven Miller and forward Omar Bravo have been named to the NASL Team of the Week for Week 8. The pair had a goal each in last Saturday's 3-2 important victory over the NASL Spring Season Champion Indy Eleven at WakeMed Soccer Park. Miller scored his first NASL goal last Saturday against Indy Eleven that catalyzed the RailHawks' comeback win. Bravo converted from the penalty spot in the 94th minute to win the game. Carolina has had seven different players named to the NASL Team of the Week in the last eight weeks. Other RailHawks to receive Team of the Week recognition include Tiyi Shipalane, Nazmi Albadawi, Matt Fondy, Brian Shriver and Matt Watson.
