Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, Wisc- The Snappers beat the Clinton LumberKings in a pitchers' duel, 1-0, in extra innings which is a common occurrence for Beloit in 2016.

Beloit starter Brendan Butler and Clinton starter Pedro Vasquez made quick work of both offenses through the early innings. Butler didn't allow a hit until a two-out single by Arturo Nieto in the fifth.

The Snappers mounted a scoring threat in the bottom of the sixth. Trace Loehr continued to torch the LumberKings pitching staff as he ripped a one-out double into left field. Kyle Wilcox then struck out Edwin Diaz looking and Trent Gilbert on a groundout to shortstop.

Beloit had a golden scoring chance in the bottom of the eighth. Luis Barrera laced a single to right field. On the play right fielder Gus Craig misplayed the ball allowing the ball to roll to the wall and Barrera scampered to third. Lukas Schiraldi struck out Collin Theroux on a nasty pitch for a crucial second out. The LumberKings decided with a base open to intentionally walk the red-hot Loehr and the move worked. Schiraldi then struck out Diaz swinging to get out of the jam.

Clinton mounted a scoring threat in the top of the ninth. Chris Mariscal and Alex Jackson connected on consecutive singles with one out. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Beloit then intentionally walked pinch hitter Dalton Kelly to load the bases with just one out. Jordan Schwartz then got in on the hands of Conner Hale that resulted in a popout to third for a pivotal second out. Schwartz got out of the mess as he retired pinch hitter Logan Taylor on a groundout to shortstop.

A potential scoring threat in the top of the tenth was quickly erased. Nieto led off the frame with a ringing double into right field but was picked off moments later by an excellent throw by catcher Collin Theroux.

The momentum carried into the bottom half of the inning. Skye Bolt was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Barrera had a productive out as he hit a slow roller to second allowing Bolt to move up 90 feet. After a flyout, the LumberKings intentionally walked Loehr to take their chances with Diaz. Diaz made the LumberKings pay as he hit a soft line drive over the shortstop to plate Bolt and give the Snappers an exciting walk-off win.

Butler went 5 2/3 stellar frames surrendering two hits and no walks while punching out five LumberKings. Schwartz and Yordy Alejo went a combined 3 1/3 shutout innings giving up four hits and two walks while recording two strikeouts. Alejo picked up the win to improve to 1-0.

Clinton starter Vasquez went five shutout frames surrendering three hits and no walks while punching out five in a no decision.

Loehr led the Snappers offense going a perfect 3-for-3 and two intentional walks. Beloit collected just six hits in the game.
