LumberKings Chop Way to Victory

August 24, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

The LumberKings' stellar night at the plate helped take a 2-0 series lead over the Snappers, winning the game by a score of 7-1. The win was also Clinton's 10th straight.

Dustin Hurlbutt (L, 3-4) allowed three runs, one earned, through 6.2 innings. The first run came in on a Conner Hale ground ball to center field, Alex Jackson scored.

The only run of the game for Beloit came on Edwin Diaz's fifth homer of the year, off of Clinton's Nick Wells.

The following four innings came up scoreless for both teams until the top of the seventh inning when the LumberKings opened up the floodgates on the Snappers. A fielding error by Jesus Lopez left Rafael Fernandez safe at first after he connected with a pitch from Hurlbutt. Jackson scored for Clinton, extending their lead 2-1. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Chris Mariscal singled a ground ball to left field which allowed Ricky Eusebio to move to second while Fernandez scored. Clinton now led Beloit 3-1.

That was it for Hurlbutt as the Snappers sent in Rob Huber with two outs in the top of the 7th. However Clinton was too powerful for the Snappers bullpen. With two on, Huber walked Jackson, loading up the bases. Hale grounded into a double play five pitches later that allowed Logan Taylor to score. The next LumberKings batter, James Alfonso tacked on his third homerun of the season to center field which also plated Gus Craig. Clinton led 6-1 heading into the ninth inning.

Another pitching change wasn't enough to stop the LumberKings from tacking on one more in the ninth inning. Andrew Tomasovich took the mound for the last inning for the Snappers. With two outs, Taylor ended his night with a fourth hit. A fly ball to the center field wall sent Taylor to second base sending Mariscal home. The Final score resulted in a 7-1 Clinton victory, their tenth in a row.

The LumberKings were able to out hit the Snappers 13-9 and were tied for homeruns at one a piece. The game changer for Clinton was that they were able to score with two outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Starting out strong and finishing stronger extended Clinton's series lead 2-0 and solidifying their place at the top of the conference even more with a record of 82-46.

Beloit went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eleven men on base. Diaz led the Snappers' offensive attack going 2-for-5 with a homerun.

Hurlbutt suffered the loss (3-4), going six innings, surrendering eight hits, one walk, three runs, and one earned run while punching out three.
