Nowhere to Run

July 30, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Corpus Christi second baseman Mott Hyde misplayed a potential double play ball in the top of the ninth on Friday night, a miscue on which the RockHounds would cash in, scoring three times to tie the game, 4-4. Hyde then atoned with one swing in the home half of the ninth, drilling a leadoff triple to right-center and scoring the game-winning run moments later on Antonio Nunez's chopper up the middle.

The ninth inning has seen high drama in each of the first two games of the series. The 'Hounds scored twice on Thursday night, erasing a 2-1 deficit, to claim a 3-2 win before rallying with the three-run frame on Friday night, only to see Hyde's heroics give Corpus Christi the game two win.

The Hooks scored three runs on two swings in the third inning on Friday, with J.D. Davis driving Brandon Mann's 0-2 pitch down the left field line for a a two-run double and Nick Tanielu sending Mann's next delivery to right-center, scoring Davis. The 3-0 lead stood until the 'Hounds broke through in the eighth on Tyler Marincov's Texas Leaguer to shallow center, scoring Matt Chapman, who had walked with one out in the inning.

J.P. Sportman's leadoff single in the ninth was followed by Hyde's error. With two out, Franklin Barreto continued his torrid pace at the plate with an RBI double into the left field corner, cutting the lead to 4-2. Since returning from a hamstring injury, Barreto (3-for-5, double, RBI, run) is 7-for-11 in three games. After Chapman walked to load the bases, Beau Taylor (down, 0-2, to start the at bat) lifted a full-count flair single to center, tying the game at 4-4.

Kibbles & Bits

CONGRATS, RYAN! RockHounds manager Ryan Christenson has been named to manage the Mesa Solar Sox in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. The league, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary season, is a showcase of Minor League Baseball's top talent and prospects. Since its inception in 1992, AFL rosters have included nearly 250 future Major League All-Stars, including 15 Most Valuable Players (including Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, Bryce Harper and former RockHound Josh Donaldson) and six future Cy Young Award winners. The Mesa club (one of six in the league) will include prospects from the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Miami Marlins and the Oakland A's. The AFL season opens on October 11.

STAT of the DAY (A "Ryan Christenson Special," left over from game one of the series): There were so many statistical tidbits from Thursday night's series opener, that we left out a dandy. When the RockHounds rallied to win in the ninth inning, it marked the first time in 36 games that the club has won in 2016 when trailing after eight innings. Wins in that situation are extremely rare - - - there have been only 15 instances of a club winning when trailing after eight innings through the first 419 games of the Texas League all season.

STAT of the DAY # 2: Friday night marked the halfway point (35 of 70 games) in the Texas League's second half pennant races. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
