SteepleCats Fall in 13 Innings

July 30, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

In the bottom of the thirteenth inning, the Sanford Mainers had a runner on third with two outs and Sam Stauble at the plate. The North Adams SteepleCats had Jared Habershaw on the mound who had already pitched a scoreless twelfth. Stauble hit Habershaw's 2-2 pitch on the ground towards third. It was all the Mainers would need in a 9-8 victory over the North Adams SteepleCats at Goodall Park Friday night.

The loss dropped the SteepleCats to 22-19 on the season. It was also the SteepleCats first loss against the Mainers this season after winning the first three meetings.

The SteepleCats led 8-2 going into the bottom of the ninth. Shaine Hughes led off the inning with a double. With one out, he scored on a single by Michael Landestoy. The Mainers had cut the lead to 8-6 and had runners in scoring position when the SteepleCats brought in closer Tanner Bird. Bird struck out Johnny Slater for the second out. Zach Jancarski singled home a run and advanced the tying run to third. Hughes came up for the second time in the inning and hit another double scoring the tying run. Jancarski attempted to score the winning run but was thrown out at home plate forcing extras.

"You cannot let the other team dictate what it is that you are doing especially when you are winning," said Assistant Coach Ethan Newton. "That is probably the biggest takeaway from today's game."

Ryan Tapp went six innings in his start for the 'Cats. He finished the day allowing two runs off of four hits. Through the first three innings, he did not allow a hit and faced the minimum. Josh Simpson came out of the bullpen and shutout the Mainers in the seventh and eighth. Bird came back out and pitched a scoreless tenth and eleventh to give the SteepleCats a chance.

"Tip our cap to our pitchers in extra innings for keeping us in it," said Coach Newton. "They gave us a chance for the first few innings and extra innings."

Dustin Shirley hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the first to set the tone for the 'Cats. Shirley finished the day going 3-6 with two RBIs. The 'Cats offense exploded with three runs in the second to go up 4-0. The 'Cats also added a run in the fourth and three more in the seventh. Nick Riotto also had a career game going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

"I thought our offense did a great job of attacking," said Coach Newton. "Defensively we were sound, too. That was great the way we came out of a two day break and come out of the gates hot. That was a positive to take away from it for sure."
