Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Luis Martinez made a first-inning lead hold up, pitching the Intimidators past the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 2-1 in 7 innings, in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Thursday evening at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (17-15 Second Half, 41-61) won its third straight game, the team's first 3-game winning streak since a 5-game streak July 2-6.
Martinez (5-7) spun 5.0 strong innings, limiting the Grasshoppers to a run on three hits while walking two and striking out five to earn the win.
Alex Katz took the mound for Kannapolis in the sixth inning and worked into trouble, allowing a hit and a walk to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, catcher Daniel Gonzalez picked off the lead runner, Josh Naylor, from third base, and Katz struck out Kyle Barrett to end the inning to keep Greensboro off the board.
Ian Hamilton struck out a batter and induced a game-ending double-play ball in the top of the the seventh to earn the save (2).
After Greensboro plated a quick run in the top of the first, Kannapolis bounced back with two runs of its own in the home half of the frame for a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Alex Call singled, and KJ Woods drew a walk off Greensboro's Cody Poteet. Danny Mendick followed with an RBI-single to cash Call, tying the game. Antonio Rodriguez doubled to right field, easily scoring Woods for the lead, however Mendick was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Poteet (4-8) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one in 5.0 innings of work.
The Intimidators will send RHP Jack Charleston (1-4, 3.59 ERA) to the mound to start Game 2 of today's doubleheader against Greensboro's RHP Trevor Richards. First pitch will be at 7:30 p.m.
The Intimidators continue this home stand on Friday with the Intimidators final craft beer sampling presented by Cabarrus Brewing Company. On Saturday, July 30, fans can stick around for post-game fireworks presented by SignArt. Sunday's game is Splash Day with a free inflatable water slide and other splash-tastic games to play.
