Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

BROOKLYN,NY - July 26, 2016 - The Cyclones took both games of a double header on Tuesday evening, to complete a three-game sweep of the cross-bridge rival Staten Island Yankees. Brooklyn took Game One by the score of 2-1, behind a pair of RBI from Colby Woodmansee and 6.0 stellar innings from Erik Manoah. In the nightcap, Brooklyn took advantage of a Staten Island error in the bottom of the seventh that tied the game, before walking off with a win thanks to Pete Alonso sacrifice fly. With the pair of wins Brooklyn improved to 19-19, moving back to the .500 mark for the first time since July 13th.

GAME ONE -- In Game One of the twin bill, the Staten Island Yankees jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Timmy Robinson singled to start the threat and Dom Thompson-Williams followed with a single of his own, and advanced to second on Jacob Zanon's throw to third base, putting a pair in scoring position with nobody out. But Brooklyn starter Erik Manoah was able to limit the damage, allowing a sacrifice fly before a pair of strikeouts as the Baby Bombers took a 1-0 lead.

But that would be all the offense that Staten Island would be able to muster, as Manoah (4-1) tossed 6.0 strong innings, allowing just the single run on six hits while walking a pair and striking out three. Staten Island went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners on base.

Meanwhile, Staten Island starter Taylor Widener was dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit while striking out five, but the Cyclones were able to run up the recent draft pick's pitch count, limiting him to 3.0 innings. When the righthander handed the ball over to reliever Brian Treiglaff, the Brooklyn bats wasted little time waking up. Michael Paez started off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left field line and quickly advanced to third on a wild pitch allowing a sacrifice fly from Colby Woodmansee to knot the score at 1-1.

That's how it would stay until the bottom of the sixth when the Cyclones would take the lead in their final turn at bat. Gene Cone singled to left-center to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Paez. Woodmansee, again, took advantage of the scoring change with a booming double off the left field wall to plate the go-ahead run and give Brooklyn a 2-1 advantage.

That's how the game would end, as Kyle Regnault pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game and get the save.

GAME TWO -- Offense was once again at a premium in the nightcap of the double header, as Brooklyn starter Raul Jacobson and Staten Island's Jonathan Padilla locked up in a pitcher's duel. The Cyclones lone run came in the bottom of the second inning when Blake Tiberi reached on a throwing and then came around to score on a two-out double from Nick Sergakis to give Brooklyn the early 1-0 advantage.

That's how it would stay, as Jacobson tossed 5.0 innings, allowing a pair of hits while striking out four. He handed the ball over to Gabriel Llanes (2-4) who cruised through the sixth inning but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. The righthander retired Nick Solak to lead off the frame, the 16th straight Yankee to be set down in order, but Drew Bridges had a bloop singled to left field to snap the string and Timmy Robinson roped a triple to right field to tie the game. Just one pitch later, Dom Thompson-Williams lined a single into right field to plate Thompson and in the blink of an eye, the Yankees had a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nick Sergakis, who went 3-for-3 on the night, started a two-out rally with a single to left field and moved into scoring position thanks to a wild pitch from Brooks Kriske. Dan Rizzie then hit a ground ball to short stop, for what seemed like the final out of the game, but Angel Aguilar's throw sailed into the Cyclones dugout allowing Sergakis to score the tying run, and moved Rizzie into scoring position himself. Arnaldo Berrios followed with a line drive single to centerfield and Rizzie tried to score the game winning run, but the Cyclones backstop was gunned down at the plate, sending the game to extra frames.

In extras, Llanes retired the Yankees in order in the top of the eighth - thanks to some smooth fielding from Michael Paez - setting the stage for the walk off win. Gene Cone led off the bottom of the frame with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Colby Woodmansee then singled to put runners on the corners to give Pete Alonso a chance to be the hero. The slugging first baseman came through in the run scoring situation, lofting a fly ball deep to left field allowing Cone to score the game winning run on a sacrifice fly, as Brooklyn won 3-2.

After a league wide off day on Wednesday, the Cyclones will head to Burlington, VT to take on the Lake Monsters in a three-game set before returning to MCU Park on Sunday to open a three-game series with the Aberdeen IronBirds. Sunday will be Wilmer Flores "Cheers to Tears" bobblehead night with the first 2,000 fans in attendance going home with this unique two-face bobblehead.
