Short...Sweet....Sweep
July 28, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
The RockHounds are in a stretch in which they play only three home games in a two-week span. The stay was short, but sweet, and saw the 'Hounds complete a three-game series sweep of Frisco, defeating the RoughRiders, 4-1 on Wednesday night at Security Bank Ballpark.
Franklin Barreto opened the last of the first with a solo home run and Matt Chapman followed with his league-leading 23rd, a two-run homer (scoring Barreto) in the third (both home runs came off one of the league's best, Conner Sadzeck). The early lead more than enough, thanks to (another) outstanding pitching performance from a RockHounds staff that has been brilliant throughout the first three and a half weeks of July.
Corey Walter went the first four innings, allowing a leadoff single and a one-out walk in the first before retiring the last 10 batters he faced over four scoreless innings. How good has Ben Bracewell been? He gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings (earning the win) ... and his ERA went "up" to 1.76. Trey Cochran-Gill (hold) continued a stretch of brilliant work out of the 'pen with 1.1 innings. In his last 15 outings, the right-hander has allowed two runs (earned) over 26.2 innings, a 0.68 ERA. Bobby Wahl slammed the door in the ninth for his eighth consecutive save. The 'Hounds' team ERA in July is an outstanding 2.10, a full point better than the next-best team mark (San Antonio, 3.10).
The RockHounds
... are 22-11 in the second half and 55-48 overall ... have won three straight games ... are 31-23 at Security Bank Ballpark and 24-25 on the road ... are 9-10 in the season series with Frisco (5-6 at Security Bank Ballpark and 4-4 at Dr Pepper Ballpark) ... are 34-33 vs. the South.
... now lead San Antonio (17-16) by five games in the Texas League South Division second half race. The Missions saw a five-game win streak snapped by Corpus Christi as Francis Martes and two relievers combined on a three-hit, 3-0 shutout. The first half champion Hooks (15-18) remain seven games back, with Frisco (13-20) falling nine games behind the RockHounds.
... open a seven-game road trip on Thursday night at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, in the opener of a four-game set with the Hooks. The clubs play Thursday through Sunday evenings in Corpus Christi, with the 'Hounds then traveling to Frisco for a three-game series versus the RoughRiders (August 1-3). Game time each night of the road swing is 7:05 p.m., except for Sunday at Corpus Christi which is at 6:05 p.m.
Kibbles & Bits
STAT of the DAY: If Corpus Christi sweeps both half-season pennant races, the South Division's second playoff club would be a wild card entry, decided by overall season record. When the second half began, Frisco was 5.5 games up on the RockHounds in that stat, but the 'Hounds (55-48) have made a turnaround in the second half and now lead the RoughRiders (51-51) by 3.5 overall. The RockHounds were a wild card entry when they won the Texas League title in 2014.
- Whatever prompted Ryan Christenson to move Matt Chapman to the number two spot in the lineup on Wednesday ... it worked! Hitting second for the first time this season, Chapman went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk, and his first out may have been the game's hardest hit ball, a drive on which Frisco's Ryan Cordell made a brilliant, leaping catch against the wall in left field in the first inning.
- Franklin Barreto was out from July 17-25 (hamstring), but has celebrated his return to the lineup by going 4-for-6, with a home run, a double, three runs scored and three runs batted in over the last two games of the Frisco series. Oakland's top prospect, Barreto is now hitting .467 (14-for-30) in his last nine games ... .421 (24-for-57) in his last 16 ... and .363 (37-for-102) in his last 30 contests.
