Payamps Allows One Hit over Seven Innings in 9-2 Win

VISALIA, CA - Joel Payamps fired seven innings for Visalia (60-43, 14-19) and allowed one hit and two unearned runs in a 9-2 win over Modesto (39-63, 13-20) in the rubber match at Rawhide Ballpark on Wednesday night to earn his third win of the season.

The only blemish on the night for RHP Joel Payamps (3-3, 4.50) was a one out, RBI double by 1B Colin Ferguson that scored 3B Josh Fuentes, who reached on an error, in the fifth inning. Otherwise Payamps was lights out, walking one and recording a season-high tying nine strikeouts in the win.

Visalia, against RHP Parker French (6-7, 2.81), scored five times in the second inning and never looked back. RF Victor Reyes began the rally with a single. Two batters later C Michael Perez knocked in Reyes with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. 2B Robelys Reyes reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. SS Galli Cribbs laced a two-run triple into the gap for a 3-0 lead and then CF Zach Nehrir knocked in Cribbs with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead. Nehrir scored when LF Grant Heyman reached on an error for the final tally of the inning and when the dust settled it was 5-0 Rawhide.

In the third the Rawhide added an unearned run when Perez reached base on a fielder's choice and then was singled to third base by Robeleys Reyes, who had a four hit night. Cribbs then reached on an error that scored Perez for a 6-0 lead.

Modesto scored their only two runs in the fifth against Payamps on the Ferguson RBI double and then he scored on an error and a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-2.

French pitched five innings and gave up eight hits and six runs (four earned) on two walks and he struck out four in the loss.

LHP Tyler Matzek came in and in his two innings of work relinquished one run when Robelys Reyes singled and stole his way to third. Nehrir, who was hit by a pitch, was thrown out trying to steal second base and on the play Reyes stole home for a 7-2 lead.

RHP Craig Schlitter pitched the bottom of the eighth and Perez and Robelys Reyes both singled to begin the inning. 1B Cody Regis, who finished the series 7-for-12 knocked them both in a single for a 9-2 lead.

RHP Nick Baker pitched two scoreless innings to close out the 9-2 win as the Rawhide won the rubber match over Modesto.

Visalia now heads to Stockton to open up a four game series followed by Modesto for three before coming back home to face Inland Empire on Thursday, August 4th. Tomorrow night will feature RHP Markus Solbach (0-0, 5.40) for Visalia against RHP James Naile (0-0, 4.50) for Stockton with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
