Fernandez's Hit Streak Ends in Loss to Voyagers

July 28, 2016 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

Vince Fernandez hit streak ended at 19 Wednesday night at Suplizio Field in the Grand Junction Rockies 6-3 loss to the Great Falls Voyagers.

Fernandez finished 0-for-4, striking out in his first three at bats before grounding out in his final chance. It is just the second time all season Fernandez failed to reach base in a game this season. The hit streak was the third longest in franchise history, trailing Raimel Tapia's 29 game hit streak in 2013 and David Dahl's 27 the season before.

Riley Pint took the loss for the Rockies, his fourth straight, after allowing five unearned runs in five innings. His error in the third inning led to the Voyagers first run, and with two out, five straight Voyagers reached base to make it 5-0.

Hunter Melton homered with Jose Gomez aboard in the fourth to get the Rockies on the board, but they didn't score again until Joel Diaz doubled home a run in the ninth with the Rockies already trailing 6-2.

Grand Junction finished with four hits, one more than it's season-low as the Rockies finish the first 16-22, their worst first half finish in franchise history. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
