Martes Prevents Missions Sweep

San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio was denied a sweep of Corpus Christi Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium as they were held to just three hits in a 3-0 loss.
Lefty Tim Berry got the ball Wednesday for a Missions team looking for their first sweep of any kind since last August. Berry, who was making just his third start with the club, produced his best results.
The 25-year-old hurler had not pitched more than five and a third innings in any of his 2016 outings. However, in the homestand finale, Berry tossed seven and a third innings of two-run, six-hit ball. Berry struck out five on the night, but walked four.
Three of the four Berry (0-2) free passes came in the second, the third of which to Ramon Laureano forced in the game's first run. Two innings later, the Hooks pushed their lead to two when Alejandro Garcia led off the frame with a homer down the left-field line.
On most nights Berry's effort would have been more than enough for a victory, but his mound opponent, Francis Martes, put on a pitching clinic.
The right-hander allowed just one hit and two walks, while striking out nine over seven shutout innings. Martes (6-4) threw 62 of his 99 pitches for strikes.
Relievers Ryan Thompson and Chris Cotton (2nd save) each tossed an inning to cap the Hooks' 11th shutout of the season, while snapping the Missions' season-high five-game win streak.
Corpus Christi (15-18, 62-41) capped scoring in the ninth off Rafael De Paula with Antonio Nunez's RBI-groundout.
San Antonio (17-16, 39-64) begins a seven-game road trip Thursday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark when they take on Frisco (13-20, 51-51) in the first of four. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Dinelson Lamet (3-4, 3.97) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with lefty Victor Payano (6-6, 3.98).
