Yard Goats Sweep Baysox with 8-3 Win

Bowie, MD- The Hartford Yard Goats (58-44) completed a 3-game sweep with an 8-3 victory against the Bowie Baysox (43-59) on Wednesday afternoon at Prince George's in Bowie, Maryland. The win improved the Yard Goats to 14 games above .500 for the fifth time this season and first since May 9th when the club was in first place at 23-9. Infielder Pat Valaika scorched a 2 RBI double to highlight a four run second inning as the Yard Goats won for the 10th time in 12 games. The double extended Valiaka's hit-streak to 15 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the Eastern League. RHP Sam Howard pitched six innings and allowed just two runs for his second win at Hartford. Raimel Tapia had four hits as the Yard Goats converted on their second sweep in the last three series and won for the 10th time in 12 games.

The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game in the first inning off Bowie starter John Means. Raimel Tapia began the game with a double to centerfield to start his four-hit game. He moved to third base on Pat Valiaka's sacrifice bunt and scored on Rosell Herrera's two out RBI single to left field, giving Hartford a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox scored twice in the first inning off Hartford starter Sam Howard. Three of the first four batters for Bowie had singles, including Gabarez Rosa's RBI hit scoring Jay Gonzalez. Veteran Quincy Latimore followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Sharlon Scoop and giving the Baysox a 2-1 lead.

However, the Yard Goats went to work against Means again in the second inning. Ashey Graeter began the frame with a leadoff single and Jackson Williams followed with a single and Greater went to third base on a throwing error on Sharlon Schoop. Juan Ciriaco's infielder grounder tied the game 2-2 as Greater scored from third. Raimed Tapia then reached on an infield putting runners at the corners. Pat Valaika then crushed a double to left field, extending his hit-streak to 15 games and scored Williams and Tapia making it 4-2 Yard Goats. Later in the inning Rosell Herrera joined the party with another two out RBI hit, scoring Valiaka in the 4-run inning.

After getting reached for a pair of runs in the first inning, Hartford starter Sam Howard settled down and hurled six innings of two run baseball. The Yard Goats added a run in the fifth inning on Ryan McMahon's RBI single scoring Noel Cuevas and giving the visitors a 6-2 edge.

The Yard Goats added two more runs off reliever Tanner Scott in the seventh inning to take an 8-2 lead. Tanner walked the first two batters he faced, Rosell Herrera and Ryan McMahon. After retiring a batter, he would proceed to walk the next two men, including a bases loaded free pass to Jackson Williams, scoring Herrera and making it 7-2 Hartford. Juan Ciriaco's groundout scored McMahon to make it 8-2.

Reliever Johendi Jiminian hurled two scoreless innings of relief and Shane Broyes was reached for a run on back-to-back doubles in the ninth but retired Conner Bierfeldt on strikes to end the game and complete the three game sweep.

The Yard Goats open up a five game in four day series and against the Harrisburg Senators tomorrow night (5:05 PM). The series will be played at a neutral ballpark, Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire. RHP German Marquez will pitch for the Yard Goats. The game will be broadcast live on News Radio 1410 WPOP.
