MINERS SNAP SKID 9-3 OVER ROCKLAND

July 27, 2016 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex County Miners News Release

Pomona, NY - The Sussex County Miners (24-40) got a 3-hit performance from Alex DeBellis, 5 solid innings from Ran Kulik, clutch bullpen work from Michael Suk, and timely at bats in the later innings to pull away and defeat the Rockland Boulders (38-25) 9-3 on Wednesday afternoon in front of 3,588 fans at Palisades Credit Union Park. The win snapped the Miners losing streak at 4, while halting the Rockland winning streak at 3.

The Miners bats were led by DeBellis' 3 for 5 outing at the plate. DeBellis hit his 3rd home run in the 4th inning to tie the score 2-2 at the time. For DeBellis, the 3 HRs have all been hit against his former team, and it was his second HR in as many games. Dominique Taylor drve in 2 runs with a 7th inning double, and Nick Giarraputo and Dustin Lawley also had 2 RBIs each on the afternoon.

Also of note at the plate was the Miners patience. Sussex County drew 10 bases on balls in the game, which set a franchise record for most in a single game. The previous high of 8 was achieved 5 times previously, including twice this season. And Jay Austin stole his 31st base of the season to retake the Can-Am lead from Rockland's Junior Arrojo, as well as extend his own club record for most stolen bases in a season.

Kulik was called on to start his second game for the Miners and turned in 5 solid innings against Rockland's offense. Kulik surrendered 2 runs, both on former Miner Elvin Soto's 3rd home run of the season. In just his second start since last September, Kulik threw 83 pitches and entered the 6th with a 4-2 lead.

But Kulik would run into a jam in the 6th. 2 singles and a walk had the bases loaded, and Bobby Jones called on Suk to keep Rockland at bay. And the big right hander from Blairstown would do just that, striking out the side upon entering and maintaining the Miner lead at 4-2. That moment was the turning point in the game, as the Miners would take on 3 runs in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th to pull away. Overall, Suk would allow a run on 3 hits in his 3 innings of work. Michael Tamburino would come on and throw a scoreless 9th inning to close the game out.

The Miners now head home for a 4 game series against the Quebec Capitales, starting Thursday at 7:05 pm. Joe Donino is the scheduled starter for the Miners, while Jasvir Rakkar is scheduled for Quebec. Tickets for this and all Mienrs home games can be purchased at the box office, calling (973) 940-0222, or going to www.sussexcountyminers.com/tickets. Tomorrow night's game can also be seen on Service Electric Channel 10, www.canamleague.tv, and can also be heard on the Miners Radio Network.
