San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - Jason Forjet allowed just one run over seven dominant innings and the Giants broke a late tie with a bases loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the seventh en route to a 2-1 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The win was San Jose's (54-48) fourth in a row and sixth in the last seven games.

Forjet (10-7) picked-up his league-high tying 10th win of the season as the right-hander surrendered only three hits during his masterful start. Forjet, who retired 20 out of the 24 batters he faced, struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Carlos Diaz (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and D.J. Snelten (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then worked perfect eighth and ninth innings respectively out of the Giants bullpen to seal the victory. Snelten earned his first save of the year.

Dylan Davis (2-for-2, 2B, HR, RBI) reached base in all four of his plate appearances on a double, a solo home run and a pair of walks to lead San Jose offensively. Cristian Paulino (2-for-3, 2B) also finished with a multi-hit game.

Forjet began his start with four hitless innings retiring 12 out of the first 13 Bakersfield hitters that came to the plate. The Blaze's only baserunner during the opening four frames was Gianfranco Wawoe reaching on an error with two outs in the top of the second. Forjet fanned one batter in each of the first three innings before striking out the side in a perfect top of the fourth.

Davis then gave the Giants a 1-0 lead when he began the bottom of the fourth with a towering solo home run to left. The homer was Davis' second in as many nights and ninth with San Jose this season.

The Blaze though immediately tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth. Jay Baum led off with a slow roller to third and beat the throw to first from Miguel Gomez. The infield single was Bakersfield's first hit of the game. Wawoe then bounced into a fielder's choice with Baum forced out at second. Braden Bishop followed with a line drive single to center advancing Wawoe to third and then Daniel Torres lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score the tying run.

Forjet then cruised through the sixth and seventh innings to keep the game tied. In the top of the sixth, Jordan Cowan singled with one out, but Tyler Marlette followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play. Forjet needed just eight pitches to work a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

The Giants reclaimed the lead with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Facing reliever Issac Sanchez, Ty Ross led off with a single to right. Paulino then reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Ronnie Jebavy was up next, but during his at-bat, Ross was picked-off at second base by the catcher Torres for the first out. Jebavy eventually walked and then Robbie Garvey flied out to center advancing Paulino to third. With Davis at the plate, Jebavy stole second to put a second runner in scoring position. Davis was then intentionally walked to load the bases bringing Jonah Arenado to the plate. And on a 1-0 pitch, Sanchez hit Arenado on the arm to force home Paulino with the go-ahead tally. Sanchez did prevent further damage in the inning when he struck out Gomez to retire the side.

With San Jose ahead by a run, Diaz entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the eighth and promptly set down the side in order on two fly outs to right and a strikeout. Then in the ninth, Snelten induced three straight groundouts of Drew Jackson, Cowan and Marlette to end the game. The trio of Giants hurlers combined to retire the final 10 Blaze hitters of the contest.

Sanchez (3-3) was saddled with the loss after yielding one run on two hits over his two innings of relief. Bakersfield starter Osmer Morales pitched the first five innings and surrendered one run. Morales allowed three hits, walked a season-high five and struck out five.
