West Virginia and Lowell Split Doubleheader

GRANVILLE, W.V. - Black Bears' 3B Will Craig went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored but Lowell defeated West Virginia 5-3 in the first game of the doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon from Monongalia County Ballpark. Starter RHP James Marvel fell to 3-4 tossing five innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Lowell's offense found early success off of Marvel as CF Matt McLean led off the first inning with a triple to the right-center field gap and came around to score on an RBI groundout from 2B Victor Acosta putting the Spinners ahead 1-0. The Spinners would increase their advantage to 3-0 an inning later on 1B Jerry Downs' solo home run and an RBI single off the bat of McLean.

In the top of the third inning, SS Carlos Tovar lined an RBI single to center field to increase the Black Bears' deficit to 4-0. But, West Virginia would respond in the bottom of the frame on Craig's two RBI single to cut the Spinners lead in half, 4-2.

West Virginia would close the gap once again in the fifth as an RBI sacrifice fly from CF Sandy Santos scored Craig who doubled with one out. Lowell added an insurance run in the sixth on Acosta's RBI sacrifice fly to make the score 5-3. Lowell closer RHP Dioscar Romero quieted the Black Bears' offense tossing the final two innings scoreless to log his third save of the year.

For the Spinners, starter LHP Darwinzon Hernandez improved to 3-2 tossing five innings, striking out six batters while giving up two earned runs. Tovar and McLean each had two hits as Lowell outhit West Virginia 8-7.

Game Two

West Virginia starter RHP Daniel Beddes recorded his third win in a row as the Black Bears were victorious 4-0 over the Lowell Spinners in the second game of the doubleheader from Monongalia County Ballpark on Tuesday night. The Utah Valley product tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while fanning five hitters.

The Black Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as 2B Erik Forgione tripled down the right field line and came around to score on a Spinners' error. An inning later, West Virginia increased their advantage to 2-0 on an RBI double from C Kevin Krause.

In the fifth, SS Stephen Alemais' RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI single from RF Matt Diorio allowed West Virginia to pull away 4-0. Lowell starter RHP Daniel Zandona received the loss giving up two runs (zero earned) over 3.2 innings. Black Bears' reliever RHP Billy Roth hurled a scoreless seventh inning.

Forgione sparked West Virginia's offense going 1-for-2 with two runs scored as both teams had five hits each. For the Spinners, 2B Victor Acosta went 1-for-3 with a triple.

After an off day tomorrow, West Virginia (19-19) will begin a six-game road trip when they battle the Auburn Doubledays (16-22) on July 28 at 7:05 PM from Falcon Park.
