Sayles' Walk Off Homerun Sweeps Tigers

Niles, OH-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers capped off their home stand in grand fashion on Tuesday night. Entering the ninth inning trailing 3-2, Silento Sayles would send everyone home happy when he connected on a three run walk off homerun for the 6-3 win. With the win the Scrappers complete their first three game sweep of the season.

The Tigers would take their first lead of the series in the top of the second inning. Tanner Donnels started the inning being hit by a pitch. A single would move him to third before an RBI sacrifice fly from Austin Athmann would score him for the 1-0 lead.

Connecticut would then add single runs in the third and fourth innings to push their lead out to 3-0.

The Scrappers would start their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Andrew Calica walked to start the inning, Gavin Collins would double to bring him in to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Mahoning Valley would pull to within a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sayles would start the inning with a single. A one out Collins single would then move him to second. With two outs, Sayles would score on a fielding error on the Tigers.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jack Goihl would start the rally with a leadoff walk. Erlin Cerda would come on to run for Goihl. Todd Isaacs then attempted to bunt Cerda to second. On the play, Tigers' pitcher Bryan Garcia would allow both runners to reach safely on a throwing error to second. Alexis Pantoja would then sacrifice both runners into scoring position with a bunt. Gabriel Mejia would tie the score when he drove in Cerda on another Tigers' fielding error to set the stage for Sayles. With one out and two runners on base, Sayles would send a 1-2 pitch over the leftfield wall for his first homerun of the season and set off a wild celebration at home plate.

The win is the first time this season that the Scrappers have won when trailing after the eighth inning. They were 0-17 before Sayles' hit. The Scrappers have also now won five straight games and complete their first series sweep of the year.

Juan Hillman started and took a no decision in 4.0 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Hillman walked one and struck out three. Argenis Angulo would then go 3.0 shutout innings in relief. He allowed just two hits. Angulo walked one and struck out three. Ryan Perez would follow with 1.0 inning of one hit baseball. He did not walk a batter or record a strikeout. Ping-Hsueh Chen (1-1) earned the win with 1.0 inning of scoreless relief. HE allowed just one hit. Chen walked one and struck out one.

The Scrappers (17-21) will now head to Aberdeen, MD to open a three game series with the Ironbirds on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05. Shane Bieber is scheduled to start for Mahoning Valley. The Scrappers will return home for three game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters on Sunday.
