July 25, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

The International League announced today that Columbus utility player Yandy Diaz and Lehigh Valley pitcher David Buchanan have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from July 18-24. Diaz is the second Clippers player to be so honored this season, following Giovanny Urshela (April 25-May 1), while Buchanan is Lehigh Valley's third pitcher to claim a weekly award this season, joining Zach Eflin (April 11-17) and Ben Lively (June 6-12).

YANDY DIAZ, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Yandy Diaz led the International League over the past week with a .519 batting average and 14 hits, while finishing just one off the pace in RBI (8), runs scored (6), and walks (5). He was also 2nd in the circuit in on-base percentage (.576) and 3rd in slugging (.815). His 1-for-4 effort on Wednesday afternoon was the only game of the week in which he failed to collect multiple hits, and overall he now has hitting streak of 14 games. He had eight hits and six RBI in Columbus' four-game sweep over Pawtucket this week, helping the Clippers open up a 4.0-game advantage in the IL West Division. Diaz is now the League-leader for the season with a .340 batting average and a .419 on-base percentage.

24-year-old Yandy Diaz is in his third season as a professional player after defecting from Cuba and signing with the Indians in 2013. Last season he was an All-Star in the Double-A Eastern League before making his Triple-A debut late in the year and helping the Clippers capture the Governors' Cup title. He has yet to play in the Major Leagues. Diaz is a native of Villa Clara, Cuba.

DAVID BUCHANAN, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Lehigh Valley right-hander David Buchanan helped keep the IronPigs in line for a playoff berth this week as he delivered a pair of road victories with just one run allowed over a League-best 15.0 innings pitched. He nearly threw a shutout Tuesday night at Indianapolis, giving up his first run in in his last 14.0 innings of work with two outs in the 9th on a Jason Rogers RBI-single, but the IronPigs still prevailed 4-1. Sunday evening in Louisville, Buchanan won for the third straight time after tossing 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball in a 5-1 victory that capped off a 6-1 road trip for the IronPigs and put the team 20-games over .500 for the first time in franchise history. This week Buchanan improved his record on the year to 7-5 and is now 4th in the League in innings pitched with a total of 115.2.

27-year-old David Buchanan is in his seventh season as a professional pitcher after being chosen by Philadelphia in the 7th round of the 2010 draft. He first reached Lehigh Valley in 2013 and is also a veteran of 35 starts at the big league level with the Phillies. Buchanan is a native of Atlanta, Georgia.
