Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Ronald Guzman and Luis Marte accounted for seven RBI's as Frisco overcame a four-run deficit to defeat Corpus Christi 7-6 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 3,958.

The RoughRiders' victory on getaway day was powered by a six-run outburst over the sixth and seventh innings, earning them a split of the four-game series.

Shortstop Mott Hyde's throwing error and two-out singles from Joe Jackson and Marte opened the door to an unearned run and early Frisco (13-17; 51-48) lead. Lead-off hitter Lewis Brinson reached on the miscue and scored on Marte's hit up the middle. Guzman (bunt single) followed Brinson homeward but was thrown out by James Ramsay.

Play was interrupted for 11 minutes at the start of the home second due to a bench-clearing brawl. Hooks designated hitter Danry Vasquez charged pitcher Yohander Mendez, who struck Vasquez in the thigh with a first-pitch delivery. Vasquez, Mendez, and on-deck batter Ramon Laureano were ejected by home plate umpire Clayton Hamm.

Vasquez's pinch-runner, Nolan Fontana, made it 1-1 by scoring on a Kellin Deglan passed ball. Fontana reached second when replacement pitcher Jose Monegro walked pinch-hitter Derek Fisher, and third on Conrad Gregor's bounce out.

Corpus Christi (14-16; 61-39) earned its runs during the fourth, Hyde's two-run triple and a Roberto Pena RBI single moving the home team ahead 4-1. Fisher drew a one-out walk and later scored, as did Gregor (single).

Gregor was at it again in the fifth, his two-out single scoring Fontana, who stroked a two-out hustling double.

The RoughRiders responded with a pair of two-run yard shots. Guzman's 15th homer of 2016 cut the Hooks' lead to 5-3. One out later, Jackson's two-run double to right-center chased starter Kent Emanuel. Kyle Smith (3-6) relieved and surrendered a two-run blast to Marte.

Emanuel's outing ended with a line of 5 2/3 innings, three earned runs, six hits, and two strikeouts. He retired 13 straight before Andy Ibanez's one-out single in the sixth.

Guzman beat the shift with a two-out ground ball single through a vacant shortstop position to plate Luis Mendez (lead-off walk) and Deglan (double) the next inning.

J.D. Davis' 16th home run, a two-out solo blast that sent Jose Valdespina (4-1) to the showers, pulled the Hooks within a run at 7-6. John Fasola, Frisco's most effective pitcher of the night, earned his fourth save. He fanned three in 2 1/3 shutout innings.

Jackson (9) and Marte (6) have hitting streaks of note.

Corpus Christi meets the San Antonio Missions Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday in the Alamo City, returning to Whataburger Field Thursday for a seven-game homestand. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
