Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, ILL. - The Southern Illinois Miners were down 10-1 to the Washington Wild Things on Sunday night at Rent One Park before making an epic comeback, scoring five runs in the fifth and then five more in the sixth to take the lead 11-10 on a grand slam by STEVE MARINO en route to a 12-10 victory. It marks the team's eighth win in a row as they secured a season-series sweep of the Wild Things.

The nine-run deficit overcome also marks the largest comeback win in franchise history.

Washington exploded early, scoring 10 runs off RICK TEASLEY in the first four innings, and they had a 10-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. In the inning, FRANCISCO ROSARIO led off with a walk against Washington starter Brian O'Keefe and after a flyout for the first out of the inning, four consecutive singles brought home two runs, with RBI hits by NOLAN EARLEY and ALEX DE LEON to make the score 10-3. RILEY MOORE then lifted a sacrifice fly to left for a 10-4 score before EDISON SANCHEZ launched a two-run double to right-center, chasing O'Keefe and drawing the Miners within 10-6.

Against Andrew Woeck (2-1) in the sixth, Southern Illinois finished their comeback in dramatic fashion. After Rosario reached on a leadoff error by Austin Wobrock, a single by BRENDAN O'BRIEN and a walk by Kennedy on a nine-pitch at-bat loaded the bases for Earley, who also drew the base-on-balls to cut the deficit to 10-7. After a fielder's choice with the lead runner put out at home for out number one in the frame, Marino came up and smacked the ball over the fence in left-center for his 13th homer of the season and second grand slam, as Southern Illinois took an 11-10 lead.

The Miners' bullpen would hold that lead, with an insurance run provided in the eighth on a De Leon sacrifice fly following a leadoff triple by Earley, and ADAM LOPEZ notched his sixth save with a scoreless ninth. Earley, De Leon and Marino all had two hits in the contest with multiple runs scored and RBIs each in the contest, as the Miners remained perfect since the all-star break.

Southern Illinois remains at home after an off day on Monday to tangle with the Windy City ThunderBolts beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
