Rascals Unable to Close out Weekend Series with a Win

July 24, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

Looking to get to .500 for the first time since June 30th, the Rascals (28-30) fell into a 2-0 hole after the opening frame and then a pair of home runs got the 2015 Frontier League Champion out to a six run advantage heading into the bottom of the second.

The damage was done against the Rascals right-hander Reese Gregory in his first professional start and although he allowed the six runs in the first two frames, he was solid the rest of his outing allowing just one runner in scoring position the next three 1/3 innings.

The rookie from St. Cloud State University gave up his first run on a leadoff home run to Marcos Derkes and then the opponent tagged him for his second with a two out RBI single from shortstop Elijah Trail which gave the Beach Bums a 2-0 lead.

Traverse City got two more home runs in the second inning with a solo shot from Giancarlo Brugnoni and then with two on and two out, slugger Steven Patterson swung at the first pitch and drilled one over the left-center wall giving the Rascals their largest deficit since July 3rd.

Trailing 6-0, the Rascals found success in the bottom of the second inning off Beach Bums starter Tucker Simpson and hit a pair of home runs of their own. With one out, Josh Ludy and Clint Freeman homered back-to-back bringing the Rascals within four runs and River City brought the tying run to the plate a few batters later.

After a Willi Martin double, Simpson struggled with his command and loaded the bases on a pair of walks with the top of the order due up next. However, Alexi Colon struck out and Jason Merjano, who represented the tying run, flew out to the warning track to leave the bases loaded.

Both starters were good the rest of the way and each took a decision. Gregory took the loss, lasting 5 1/3 innings giving up six runs on nine hits. Simpson went five giving up just the two runs on four hits and two walks.

Southpaw Austin Warner replaced Gregory for a scoreless sixth inning and then one out away from the 7th inning stretch, the Beach Bums took a 7-2 lead via a RBI double from veteran Jose Vargas.

Sunday afternoon was Warner's first appearance since July 2nd and although he loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs, just one run came around to score on a double play groundout that capped off the scoring in the 8-2 Beach Bums win.

Offensively for River City after Simpson left, Ludy was the only Rascal to record a hit and three Beach Bum relievers combined to hold the Rascals scoreless and helped their club avoid being swept for the second time on the year by the Rascals.

River City will have the day-off on Monday and then the playoff push continues Tuesday night as they welcome the Lake Erie Crushers to CarShield Field.

Prior to the game originally scheduled for 6:35, the Rascals and the Crushers will resume a game that was suspended on May 14th. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 and the game is currently tied 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning.
