Lockett's Sensational Wolff Debut Helps Missions Take
July 24, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
A career-high eight innings from right-hander Walker Lockett sparked San Antonio to a 5-0 shutout and series victory over Midland Sunday night at Wolff Stadium.
Going into Sunday's finale, the Missions were in search of their second three-game win streak of the season and their eighth series victory.
San Antonio called on Lockett, who was making just his second start at the Double-A level and his first at The Wolff. The 22-year-old hurler delivered an absolute masterpiece, limiting the first-place 'Hounds to just four hits in the longest outing of his career. Lockett (1-1) did not walk a batter and fanned six, throwing 63 of his 91 pitches for strikes.
Lockett's battery mate, Ryan Miller, provided all the runs needed for San Antonio in the bottom of the second, with a three-run homer to left off southpaw Brandon Mann. It was Miller's third homer of the season. The Missions added the game's final two runs in the fourth against Mann (1-1) with a Gabriel Quintana solo homer and Chase Jensen's RBI-groundout. It was Quintana's second dinger of the series and his team-leading 13th of the season.
Tayron Guerrero worked around a one-out double in the ninth by J.P. Sportman to wrap up San Antonio's seventh shutout of 2016. The win, coupled with Corpus Christi's loss to Frisco, moved San Antonio into sole possession of second place in the South Division second-half standings (four back of Midland). The Missions have won 11 of their last 18 games.
San Antonio (15-15, 37-63) resumes its seven-game homestand Monday at 7:05 PM with the first of three against Corpus Christi (14-16, 61-39). Kyle Lloyd (4-4, 3.61) will get the ball for the Missions in the opener, while the first-half champion Hooks counter with fellow righty Cy Sneed (4-3, 4.58). Monday is an H-E-B Family night with four box seats for just $24 with a receipt from H-E-B. Tickets must be redeemed at the Missions' first base box office.
