Rox Execute Late Inning Rally; Back in First Place
July 24, 2016 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release
Duluth, MN - The Rox tallied five unanswered runs in the final three innings and edged the Duluth Huskies, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon. St. Cloud improves to 34-16, still holds the best record in the Northwoods League, and is back in first place, a half game up on Mankato in the second half standings.
The Rox trailed 2-1 heading into the 8th inning. Mark Skonieczny (Illinois) pounded a bouncing ball in the hard turf surface and the ball skipped above the Duluth third baseman. This allowed Brandon Benson (Georgia College) to score and tied the game, 2-2. With two outs in the 8th, pinch runner Drew Freedman (Nova Southeastern) scored on a wild pitch and St. Cloud grabbed a 3-2 advantage.
Benson provided some insurance with a two-run single up the middle and the club took a 5-2 lead in the 9th inning.
RHP Austin Caspersen (St. Cloud State) was very solid on the mound as the starter. Caspersen 6.1 innings, allowed six hits, and only two runs. It was his second longest outing of the season. He got stronger as the game went on and only yielded one hit in his final three innings.
The bullpen was dominant to help preserve the victory. LHP Aaron Rozek (Minnesota State - Mankato) logged 1.2 scoreless innings. RHP Brian Glowicki (Minnesota) picked up his 4th save of the year with one flawless inning in the 9th. Glowicki has documented 9 innings in 7 appearances this year and still has not surrendered a run.
The Rox managed to climb back to win the game despite getting outhit 6-4. It is only the 3rd time the Rox have won a game when getting outhit (3-13). St. Cloud had zero hits through the first five innings. The squad turned it around and also only allowed Duluth to record two hits from the 4th inning onward.
St. Cloud has an off day on Monday and will return to action Tuesday at Mankato. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. CT and the Rox Solid Pregame Warmup starts at 6:35 p.m.
The team returns to Joe Faber Field on Thursday July 28th to begin an eight game homestand. The entertaining act of ZOOperstars presented by Plaza Park Bank & Times Media will perform on July 28th. First pitch for that game is at 7:05 p.m.
Single game tickets can be purchased 24 hours a day at www.stcloudrox.com, by calling (320) 240-9798 or by visiting the Rox ticket office located at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
The St. Cloud Times Player(s) of the Game is Austin Caspersen. Austin lasted 6.1 innings and only allowed two runs.
