Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- Jarred Mederos was 4-4 with two runs batted in and the Gary SouthShore RailCats won 9-6 over the Lincoln Saltdogs (36-25). The RailCats trimmed the Saltdogs' division lead to 4.5 games and avoided a sweep at home.

Moises Melendez earned the win for Gary SouthShore as the Venezuelan pitched quality relief innings in front of 3,050 fans at US Steel Yard. The lefty and former Saltdogs went 3.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits.

Jorge de Leon was credited with a save in the game after the right-hander navigated through a tricky top of the 9th inning.

The game looked grim for the RailCats at the beginning after Lincoln's Luis Alen launched a two-run home run over the left field wall in the second at bat of the game. RailCat starting pitcher Karl Triana walked two batters after the blast but was able to escape with just allowing the pair of scores.

The RailCats evened it up in the bottom of the 1st inning. Frank Martinez doubled to score a run and advanced to third on an error. Alex Crosby singled home Martinez in the next at bat.

The Saltdogs reclaimed the lead in the 3rd inning before the RailCats offense revved back up in the 4th. Jeremy Hamilton walked, Mederos singled and Cameron Newell sent a run home with a base hit. Anthony Checky joined in and added an RBI single in the next at bat.

The RailCats broke the game open in the bottom of the 5th inning. They used five hits and capitalized on three Saltdogs errors to plate five runs and take a 9-3 lead. Mederos hit a two RBI double with two outs. The frame inning was the second highest run total in one inning on the season for the Cats and their five hits tied a season-high.

The Saltdogs got one run off of Melendez in the 8th and started off the 9th hot against reliever Andy Roberts. Lincoln scored two off of the lefty Roberts so RailCat manager Greg Tagert brought in his closer, Jorge de Leon. The hard-throwing righty allowed the first two batters he faced to reach, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs. De Leon then retired the next three batters including striking out the last two to earn his first save of the season.

The win meant the RailCats finished the six game homestand at 3-3. The team grabbed momentum heading into a seven-game road trip followed by the All-Star Game. Four RailCats had multi-hit days compared to just one in yesterday's loss. The RailCats improved to 12-10 when committing one error. The team battled through stifling heat, with humidity above 70% and heat indexes above 100 degrees.

The RailCats next game is tomorrow night in Kansas City with first pitch at 7:05 PM. Cover of the RailCats against the T-Bones begins at 6:40 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
