Honkers Fall in Game 1 of Double Head to Stingers

Rochester, Minn.- The Rochester Honkers fell to the Willmar Stingers 10-1 in game one of a double header in Willmar Sunday afternoon. This was the first of two, seven-inning games on the day.

The Honkers got on the board first when Drew Ellis (Louisville) hit an RBI single to score Turner Buis (Cal State Fullerton) in the top of the first.

Willmar took the lead in the bottom half of the frame on a Justin Toerner (Cal State Northridge) two-RBI double to make the score 2-1.

The Stingers scored two more runs in the fourth when Brandon Perez (Southern California) hit an RBI double, then Danny Pardo (Montevallo) doubled home Perez to give Willmar a 4-1 lead.

Willmar added another run in the fifth and five in the sixth to get the 10-1 win.

Erik Cha (0-5) (Cal State Fullerton) got the start and the loss for the Honkers; he pitched one inning, allowed two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one. Brett Herber (Winona State) threw four innings in relief; he allowed three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two.

Brad Schanezer (1-1) (Kentucky) went the distance for the Stingers to get the victory; he allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out four.

Buis went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Honkers offense, while Ellis went 1-for-3 and a RBI.

Kole Cottam (Kentucky) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Toenrner went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Stingers.

Game two of the double header will start at approximately 6:05 p.m.

The Honkers will travel to Waterloo on Monday to take on the Waterloo Bucks in the final game of the SCHEELS Highway 63 Cup Series! The Honkers must win the final game to claim a share of the trophy! First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The Honkers are back at Mayo Field Tuesday, when the La Crosse Loggers come to town! Tuesday is TV Tuesday, presented by Sam's Club, where one lucky fan will have the chance to win a 40" TV! First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6:00!
