Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - A couple of new pitchers helped the Tampa Yankees (15-16, 57-43) defeat the Palm Beach Cardinals (10-21, 42-57) and salvage a split of the series with a 5-1 final on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Domingo German made his long awaited debut with the T-Yanks after "Tommy John surgery" sidelined the right-hander for the entire 2015 season. Following another setback in spring training, German began this season on the disabled list before joining Single-A Charleston on June 26th. Five starts later, the 23-year-old was transferred to Tampa.

The Yankees opened the scoring with a run in the second against LHP Ian McKinney. After two quick outs, Trey Amburgey doubled off the left field wall. Thairo Estrada followed with an RBI single, giving Tampa a 1-0 lead.

Palm Beach tied the score in the third. Vaughn Bryan sneaked his way on with a bunt single and promptly stole second. A groundout pushed the runner to third with two outs and German balked, allowing the run to score.

Tampa retook the lead in the fourth. Abiatal Avelino hit a leadoff double and scored, two outs later, on a single by Kevin Cornelius.

German worked into the fifth and fell one out shy of earning a decision. The Dominican Republic native allowed one earned run on three hits in four and two-third innings, walking two while striking out four. German threw 45 of 71 pitches for strikes.

Nestor Cortes relieved German and retired eight of the first nine batters he faced. The southpaw made his first appearance with Tampa after earning a promotion from Charleston on June 22nd.

The T-Yanks added three more unanswered runs in the later innings.

McKinney surrendered back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the sixth before RHP Cody Shumacher entered in relief. Amburgey greeted the new Palm Beach arm with an RBI double. Two batters later, Wes Wilson added an RBI sacrifice fly.

A pair of walks and a single allowed Tampa to loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Amburgey added another RBI with a sacrifice fly, scoring the final Yankee run.

McKinney (L, 6-7) allowed four earned runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out five while not issuing a walk. The lefty threw 61 of 88 pitches for strikes.

Cortes (W, 1-0) tossed four and a third scoreless innings, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out two. The 21-year-old threw 43 of 64 pitches for strikes.
