Seesaw Battle Points to Modesto in the End

July 24, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Three games have resulted in three thrilling finishes between the Bakersfield Blaze (56-43) and the Modesto Nuts (38-61).

On Saturday night, it was the home team that started early before sweating things out.

The Nuts held leads of 1-0, 3-1, and 5-3 before squeaking out a 5-4 victory over the Blaze.

Much like the first two games of their 4-game series, Bakersfield and Modesto saw Game 3 come down to the final inning.

With the bases loaded and two men out, Luis Niebla (S, 6) struck out Aaron Barbosa to end the affair.

One day after he knocked in two runs with two men out in the top of the ninth inning in a 3-0 victory, Barbosa couldn't find the same magic again.

Modesto chased starting pitcher Eddie Campbell (L, 10-8) as the lefty lasted just 4.1 innings after surrendering five runs on eight hits. The left-hander struck out three, walked two, but also had three wild pitches in defeat. With Campbell being erratic, Modesto seized the opportunity by scoring all five runs in the first four innings of play.

Omar Carrizales led the way offensively for Modesto by going 3-4 with a run scored.

Helmis Rodriguez improved his record to 2-6 by going 6.2 innings, striking out five, and surrendering three earned runs.

Bakersfield and Modesto will end their season series in Game 4 on Sunday night at John Thurman Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 with David Gascon on the call courtesy of TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com.
