Three Run 8th Inning Fuels Comeback Win over Kitsap - Pippins Game

BREMERTON, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins scored three runs in the 8th inning, holding off the Kitsap BlueJackets, 5-4, on Saturday night at Gene Lobe Field.
Trailing 3-2 entering the frame, Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga) put Yakima Valley right back into the ball game with an RBI triple, tying the game up after scoring Trevor Achenbach (Oklahoma Wesleyan) from first base on the play.
The Pippins (26-17, 11-5) would add two more runs, including the game-winning insurance run on an RBI single from Jay Schuyler (San Diego), setting the stage for Drake Atlee (Cal State Northridge) to earn the win after throwing two scoreless innings of relief.
Tanner Simpson (Lewis-Clark State College), Saturday night's starting pitcher, tossed six plus innings setting a team high with 10 strikeouts, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. Ryan Garcia (UCLA) then pitched a scoreless 9th inning, earning his first save of the season.
Trevor Achenbach scored the first run of the night for Yakima Valley in the 4th inning, improving to 18-0 when scoring five or more runs. Kyle Stahl (Central Washington) evened the score, 2-2, with an RBI single in the 5th inning, scoring Ryan Garcia, who reached base for the 9th straight game.
Andrew Bernstein (Cal Poly Slo) will take the mound Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. as the Yakima Valley Pippins search for the series win over the Kitsap BlueJackets. Fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
