Web Gem Seals Mustangs Win in 10 Innings

July 23, 2016 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

With the tying run at second and one out in the bottom of the tenth inning, Vince Fernandez laced a ball into right-centerfield. Jose Siri ran it down, but bobbled the ball initially, only to make catch on the second effort, and then threw out Jose Gomez trying to tag, preserving the Billings Mustangs 4-3 win over the Grand Junction Rockies.

Siri's play helped the Mustangs to 21-12 on the season, and their magic number to clinch the North Division's first half title is down to 2. He scored the go ahead run when Cassidy Brown singled him home with 1-out in the top of the 10th.

Billings won the game after a 1:08 rain and lightning delay that occurred in the middle of the sixth inning with the Rockies leading 3-1. The Mustangs tied the game with 2-runs in the eighth.

Before the rain delay, the Rockies scored runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Hunter Melton brought home the first on a sacrifice fly, Vince Fernandez scored the second on a wild pitch, and Manny Melendez the third when Gomez was caught in a rundown,

Mike Nikorak was the beneficiary of the early runs. He allowed one unearned run in a career-high six innings of work with five strikeouts.

Fernandez finished with two hits, extending his hit streak to 16 games.

Cole Anderson and Gomez added a pair of hits.

The loss is the Rockies fifth in a row, and drops them to 14-19 on the season. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
