Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - With an 11-run onslaught in two of the middle innings, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox came from behind to defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs 13-7 on Friday night at Security Service Field.
With two outs in the first, Matt Juengel doubled to score the first run of the game for New Orleans as Austin Nola scored. Destin Hood tried to score all the way from first, but was thrown out thanks to a perfect relay from Michael Reed to Orlando Arcia to Rene Garcia, who tagged Hood out at the plate to get Sky Sox starter Hiram Burgos (5-5, 4.78) through the first.
New Orleans added another run in the third, and the Sky Sox were quick to respond to this one off Zephyrs starter Kendry Flores (1-2, 3.53). Rene Garcia led off the bottom half with a double. A couple batters later, Kyle Wren extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single to center that scored Garcia with the first Sky Sox run of the night.
The Zephyrs increased their lead to three in the fifth on a two-run double from Xavier Scruggs that made the score 4-1 in favor of the visitors. Burgos worked around further damage in the inning to keep the deficit at three.
The New Orleans lead wouldn't last for long. Wren and Reed reached with one-out singles to get the Sky Sox started. An error allowed the second Sky Sox run to score, and then Andy Wilkins doubled off the right field wall to cut the Sky Sox deficit to just a run. Will Middlebrooks continued his torrid pace with a single that just landed fair to right field to score the tying run. Pinto scored Middlebrooks with a run scoring single to give the Sky Sox a 5-4 lead, then New Orleans turned to the bullpen try and escape the damage.
But the runs kept coming. Nate Orf greeted reliever Tyler Bremer with a single to right to score Middlebrooks. Another error allowed Pinto to score the seventh Sky Sox run. The scoring in the inning was capped when Garin Cecchini drove in Rene Garcia with a pinch-hit triple to finish off a seven run inning and give the Sky Sox an 8-4 lead.
Burgos finished his start with four earned runs against on eight hits in five innings pitched while striking out four. Thanks to the offensive outburst in the fifth, Burgos earned his team-leading fifth victory of the season.
Colorado Springs added to the lead in the sixth as Middlebrooks scored Arcia with another single to center. Nate Orf followed with a triple to right, and Rene Garcia added an RBI single to left to extend the Sky Sox lead to eight after six innings.
Austin Ross came out of the bullpen for the Sky Sox in the sixth and pitched well, allowing one run in two relief innings to keep the Sky Sox ahead. The Zephyrs scored a pair off Drew Gagnon in the eighth, but the Sky Sox reliever was able to hold the lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the fifth New Orleans error of the night allowed the Sky Sox to score their 13th run. In the ninth, Corey Knebel came in and held the Zephyrs scoreless to finish off the Sky Sox fourth win in a row.
Middlebrooks recorded four hits and three runs scored. Pinto produced there hits while Orf recorded three RBI in the win. Six Sky Sox had multi-hit games and four scored more than once in the win.
The Sky Sox and Zephyrs continue their series tomorrow night at Security Service Field. Wily Peralta (0-2, 10.97) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox against Dylan Axelrod (5-4, 4.18). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at Security Service Field.
