Hens Give Indians Double the Trouble in Wins

July 1, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens returned to the diamond on Friday looking for redemption against IL West rival Indianapolis. The Indians hit the Hens right off the field in their Thursday night win, and Buck Farmer took the ball in game one of the double header for Toledo, looking to slow down the Indy bats.

Farmer went into Friday's start still in search of his first Hens' victory of the season. The right hander was sharp early against the potent Indians as he allowed just one run through his first four innings. The damage was reminiscent of Thursday's early offense, as Danny Ortiz struck a solo home run in the second for Indianapolis putting them ahead 1-0.

This time it was Toledo who put up a crooked number in response to the 1-0 lead on Friday. In the fourth John Hicks led off the frame with a single, followed by a one out single by Dixon Machado to deep left which allowed Hicks to wheel around and tie the score at 1-1. The run was followed by a Tyler Collins walk and Indy starter Wilfredo Boscan found himself in a jam with just one gone. The right hander was unable to escape unscathed as Chad Huffman brought two more runners around on his first double since returning from the DL. Leading 3-1, Dean Green sprinkled a seeing eyed single to the right side allowing Huffman to score as Toledo gave Farmer a comfortable 4-1 lead to work with.

Dixon Machado had an impressive day at the plate in game one, as he recorded three hits in the first four innings. Machado's third knock was a single to center, extending the lead to 5-1 as Anthony Gose raced home. He would finish 3-4 in game one.

The pesky Indy offense would not be denied in the fifth however, as they did damage once again via the long ball. Gift Ngeope cut the deficit to just two off Farmer when he sent a missile over the Marco's Pizza sign in left field for a two run shot. Farmer's evening on the bump ended after 5.0 innings surrendering just three runs with four strikeouts as the righty left in line for the win.

Logan Kensing and Bobby Parnell shut the door in the final two innings as Kensing earned his 10th hold and Parnell picked up his 8th save in the 5-3 win.

Game Two

After taking a quick 30 minute breather the two teams were back on the field to play seven more innings of baseball in the night cap of the double header. Dustin Molleken took the ball for Lloyd McClendon's squad as game two looked to be a bullpen game for both teams.

Molleken gave the Hens just what they were looking for as the veteran kept the explosive Indy offense in check over his three strong innings of work. The righty's only blemish came in the third when Pedro Florimon singled home Alen Hanson. All in all, the veteran pitched a solid three innings, surrendering just two hits with three strikeouts.

The Hens bats used the momentum from game one and carried it into game two as the offense was early and often off former big leaguer Justin Masterson who took the bump for Indy. Miguel Gonzalez got the nod to catch in game number two and delivered as he brought around JaCoby Jones on a soft single to left field for Toledo's first run. In the third the Hens put together three consecutive hits as Dixon Machado, and Tyler Collins each singled followed by a two run double down the left field line from Casey McGehee. The two bagger was McGehee's team leading 21st of the season.

After a mound visit from Indianapolis, Masterson's struggles continued as Dean Green brought around the Hens fourth run on a liner to right sending Casey McGehee around the bases to score and extend the lead. The Toledo offense showed great poise off Masterson as they peppered around six hits and five total runs in Masterson's short 2.1 inning appearance.

Following Masterson's exit, the Toledo offense foamed at the mouth as the Indians went with left hander Kelvin Marte out of the bullpen. Dean Green got the best of the lefty-lefty matchup as he pummeled the first fastball he saw into the picnic area in right center field for his first Toledo home run of the season to lead off the fifth. A Miguel Gonzalez RBI single ended Marte's short night as he exited after 2.0 IP allowing three runs on three hits.

The Hen pen was spectacular in game two as each arm delivered when their number was called on. Chad Bell earned the win throwing two innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out three Indians. Preston Guilmet and Blaine Hardy came on to throw the final two frames, keeping the large lead intact for the victory.

Summary

Toledo was on fire at the plate Friday night as Dixon Machado, Dean Green and Casey McGehee stood out in the double header sweep. Machado (5-8, 3 RBI), Green (4-7, 4 RBI), McGehee (2-7, 3 RBI).

Friday's two wins were Toledo's first double header sweep since June 1st 2011.

The Toledo offense had ice water in their veins on Friday as they went 10-20 with runners in scoring position, scoring 14 total runs in the sweep.

The two teams are back in action on Saturday, as first pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
