Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
MIDLAND, MI - In the opener of a weekend series in Midland, the Bowling Green Hot Rods beat the Great Lakes Loons in 11 innings, coming away with a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Dow Diamond.
Coming into the night scoring an average of nearly six runs a game during the second half of the season, the Hot Rods offense was silenced for the most part by the Loons pitching staff.
Over the course of the first nine innings, Bowling Green was only able to muster one run in the fifth inning with a RBI single from first basemen Kewby Meyer.
While the run gave Bowling Green the initial lead, Great Lakes came back in the bottom of the frame with a RBI double from outfielder Darien Tubbs to tie up the game.
Fortunately for the Hot Rods, that was the only run the pitching staff gave up the entire night. Starter Blake Bivens tossed a season-high 6.1 innings, giving up that run the fifth on six hits total with five strikeouts. After Bivens, relievers Diego Castillo (2.2 IP, 2 H, 6 K's) and Tyler Brashears (2.0 IP, 1 H, 4 K) combined to blank the Loons through the rest of the game.
Overall, the Hot Rods pitchers struck out 15 Loons batters, their third-most in a game this season.
With the pitchers doing their job, the Hot Rods improved to 3-1 in extra-inning games with a surge in the 11th inning against righty Brian Bass (L, 1-4).
After a pair of singles by outfielders David Olmedo-Barrera and outfielder Angel Moreno, a two-out RBI single by shortstop Jake Cronenworth plated Olmedo-Barrera for the deciding run of the game.
In the bottom of the 11th, Brashears improved to 4-0 on the year by striking out two batters and stranding a leadoff walk on first after getting Tubbs to lineout to end the game.
For the Hot Rods, the win was only the second of the season when scoring two runs or less. It was also the Hot Rods first win when scoring five runs or less since May 10.
Bowling Green will continue the second leg of their roadtrip on Friday with the second game of a three-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond. They will send lefty Genesis Cabrera to the mound.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. All seven games during the road trip are in eastern time.
