Dunedin Blue Jays News Release

DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (7-2) had the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth inning but dropped the first game of a three game series against the Tampa Yankees (7-2) on Friday night 4-2. The Jays were blanked through the first eight, and their rally in the ninth made things interesting.

Dunedin could not get to starter RHP Will Carter (1-2) who picked up his first win of the season by tossing six shutout innings. Carter tied a season high with six strikeouts. He allowed five hits and was backed by LHP Jonny Drozd (H, 1) who provided two additional scoreless frames.

The Yankees jumped to a 3-0 lead against RHP Conor Fisk (L, 2-2) who made his first start of the season. Fisk fanned six over a shortened four inning start, but it was the fourth that stuck him with the loss. The Yankees connected for three runs on five straight baserunners, four hits, capped by a DH Jake Skole two-run double.

After Fisk, LHP Alonzo Gonzalez struck out four over three innings of relief work. Gonzalez kept the game close by only allowing a single hit.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Jays' found themselves with the bases loaded and nobody out against RHP Willie Gabay. CF Anthony Alford grounded into a fielder's choice, plating one. SS Richard Urena singled, knocking Gabay out of the game and bringing up 3B Emilio Guerrero as the winning run.

RHP Angel Rincon (S, 1) walked Guerrero to, once again, load the bases. With one down, 1B Ryan McBroom sent a ground ball to shortstop where SS Jorge Mateo started the game-ending double play, leaving the tying run at second base.

Game two begins at 6:30 on Saturday night. RHP Chris Rowley opposes RHP Domingo Acevedo.
