Scrappers Rally Comes Up Short

Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
State College, PA-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers fell behind 4-0 in the fourth inning but would rally to score three runs over the final three innings. However it wouldn't be enough as the Scrappers would strand the tying run on base in the ninth inning as they fell 4-3 to the State College Spikes.
Aaron Civale would start on the mound for Mahoning Valley and worked a perfect two innings while striking out three.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spikes would break through on the Scrappers bullpen.
Tommy Edman walked to start the inning. Dace Kime, on in relief of Civale, would retire the next two batters quickly before Ryan McCarvel would double with two outs to drive in Edman. Jeremy Martinez followed with a double as well to drive in McCarvel for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Kime would get a quick strikeout to start the inning. Riley Drongesen would then double. Anthony Ray followed with a two run homerun to right to put the Spikes up 4-0.
The Scrappers would chip away at the deficit with a single run in the top of the sixth inning. With one out Todd Isaacs reached on a bunt single. An Erlin Cerda single would move Isaacs to second where he would score on a Michael Tinsley RBI single.
In the top of the seventh inning the Scrappers would cut the Spikes lead to a single run. Gian Paul Gonzalez began the inning with a double. With one out Gabriel Mejia would reach on a bunt single to put two runners on base. Luke Wakamatsu would follow with an RBI double to score Gonzalez. Mejia would also score on an Isaacs RBI sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
Mahoning Valley would get the tying run on base with one out in the ninth inning when Mejia would reach on an infield single. The Scrappers would strand the tying run at first to finish the game.
Kime (0-1) took the loss in 3 innings of relief. He allowed four runs, all earned, on four hits. Kime walked two and struck out three. Tanner Tully followed with two innings of relief. He allowed a hit and struck out three. Henry Martinez would go the final inning in relief. He allowed a hit and walked one while striking out one.
The Scrappers (3-12) and Spikes (11-4) continue their series on Saturday night in State College. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. The Scrappers will send Micah Miniard (0-1) to the mound. The Scrappers will return home for the Fourth of July with a special Independence Day fireworks show to follow the game. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
