July 1, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Jack McDowell, the winner of the 1993 American League Cy Young Award, is the fourth of eight celebrity captains named for the 2016 Harris Teeter and Tide+ Triple-A Baseball Home Run Derby presented by Clariant. The event, which kicks off the three-day All-Star celebration at BB&T Ballpark, takes center stage in Uptown Charlotte on Monday, July 11th. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on July 11th and McDowell will sign pre-event autographs down on the field along with the seven other celebrity captains.

In all, a total of eight sluggers -- including six Triple-A participants (three from the International League and three from the Pacific Coast League) and two High School Home Run Derby winners (Riley Zayicek of Lake Norman High and Trent Alley of Charlotte Country Day) -- will compete for the 2016 Triple-A Home Run Derby championship belt. Home Run Derby participants and additional celebrity captains will be announced in the coming weeks leading up to the July 11th event. McDowell joins the already announced trio of former NFL veteran Jason Sehorn, Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson, and four-time NBA All-Star Mark Price.

McDowell excelled on the mound at Stanford University and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round (fifth overall) of the 1987 amateur draft. The California native won his major league debut on September 15, 1987 after throwing seven scoreless innings for the White Sox against the Minnesota Twins as a 21-year-old. A three-time American League All-Star, McDowell led the league with 22 wins in 1993 and went on to win the AL Cy Yong Award. He finished second in the AL Cy Young Award voting in 1992. Over the course of his 12-year major league career, he led the league in complete games three times, games started two times, and shutouts once.

"Black Jack" currently resides in Charlotte with his family and is an analyst on Charlotte Knights TV broadcasts on WMYT My 12 for Saturday home games. McDowell, who will represent the U Deserve A Chance Foundation, is currently an instructor at Carolinas Baseball Center (CBC) in Charlotte.
