Edenton Steamers News Release

WILMINGTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers plated four ninth-inning runs, but the Wilmington Sharks walked off with a 9-8 triumph on Thursday night. Edenton (10-16) lost its second contest against the Sharks, while Wilmington (15-10) has won four of its last five games.

Sam Beattie shouldered the loss for the Clams. Beattie (0-2) allowed one unearned run in the ninth inning without recording an out.

Ryan Kelly took the win for the Sharks. Kelly (1-0) gave up one run on as many hits while recording one strikeout in the final inning.

The Sharks drew first blood with three runs in the second. Alex Bohm started the rally with a one-out double, and Ryan Jeffers brought him home with a single in the next at bat. Back to back singles for Ward Coleman and Grant Koch loaded the bases before Michael Hungate knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jeffers. Clark Scolameiro added a fourth single to plate Coleman and give Wilmington a 3-0 lead.

After the Sharks extended their lead to four in the third, the Steamers charged back to tie the game in the fourth. Tyler Ammerman singled with two outs and runners on second and third to bring in the Clams' first run of the night, and Richie Cunningham followed with a triple down the right field line to plate two more. Bobby Schuman tied the game with a double in the next at bat.

Wilmington regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning, and another insurance run in the seventh gave the Sharks and 8-4 advantage heading to the final inning.

The Teal and Black fought back, once again, with four more runs in the ninth. After Cunningham reached on a throwing error by shortstop Cletis Avery, Schuman cut the Wilmington lead in half with a homerun to right-center. Aaron Aucker continued the rally with a double, and Trey Hair cracked the second Steamer dinger of the inning to knot things up at eight runs apiece.

The Sharks kept their composure and finished off the Steamers in the bottom of the ninth. Madison Stokes led things off with a double off the wall in right, and Bohm put two runners on with no outs after drawing a walk. In the next at bat, Jeffers bounced a ball to short, but Aucker was unable to field Ammerman's throw to third. As the ball rolled away from Aucker at third, Stokes charged home to end the game.

The Edenton Steamers finish off their first-half schedule with home games against the Peninsula Pilots on Friday and the Wilson Tobs on Saturday. Both contests are set to start at 7 p.m. For more information, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
