San Jose Giants News Release

VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Rawhide used a six-run bottom of the third to take the lead before breaking the game open with a four-run eighth inning en route to a 12-6 win over the San Jose Giants on Thursday evening at Recreation Park. The series-opening defeat was San Jose's (41-36) third loss in a row overall.

Jonah Arenado (2-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI) and Dylan Davis (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) each homered as part of multi-hit games to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-4, RBI), Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and Cristian Paulino (2-for-4, 2B) also finished with two hits apiece.

The game went back-and-forth early as the teams traded the lead. San Jose jumped out with a run in the top of the first as Jebavy began the contest by drawing a walk before Davis lined a one-out single into right. Then with two down, Vizcaino, Jr. grounded an RBI single into left for a 1-0 Giants lead.

Visalia though answered with a two-run bottom of the first against San Jose starter Mark Reyes. Robelys Robles led off with a single before stealing second and third base. Then with one down, Marty Herum blasted a game-tying RBI double off the fence in left. Reyes recovered to set down the next batter, Michael Perez, on a groundout, but then Henry Castillo's grounder to shortstop was thrown away by Richard Rodriguez for an error allowing Herum to score for a 2-1 Rawhide advantage.

The Giants responded in the second to immediately tie the game as Paulino singled with one out, advanced to second on Rodriguez' groundout and scored when Jebavy ripped a two-out single into right. Arenado then gave San Jose a 3-2 lead with a towering solo home run down the left field line in the top of the third. The homer was Arenado's eighth of the season - tops among active Giants players.

The Rawhide, however, sent all nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the third scoring six runs on six hits to take the lead for good. A walk to Chuck Taylor started the frame before Herum again doubled to deep left putting runners on second and third with none out. Perez followed with a line drive single into right plating both runners to put Visalia back in front at 4-3. After a single from Castillo and a groundout, Stryker Trahan delivered a two-RBI single to make it 6-3. Colin Bray then produced his own RBI single for a 7-3 advantage. The hit ended Reyes' night as the left-hander retired just one out of the seven batters he faced in the inning. Dusten Knight entered from the bullpen and allowed a two-out RBI single to Reyes extending the Rawhide lead to 8-3.

San Jose got back into the game with a three-run top of the fifth against Visalia reliever Jency Solis. Robbie Garvey led off with a single before Davis stepped to the plate and lined a two-run home run to left center. Arenado followed with a double into the left field corner and immediately scored when the next batter, Vizcaino, doubled into the right center field gap. With the Rawhide lead trimmed to 8-6, Miller Diaz was summoned from the bullpen and he managed to prevent further damage as the Giants would get no closer in the contest. Diaz fanned Ty Ross for the first out of the inning. T.J. Bennett then grounded a single up the middle to move Vizcaino to third as the potential tying run was on base. Paulino though hit a slow grounder to first that saw Herum easily throw out Vizcaino at the plate for the second out. Rodriguez then grounded out to end the inning.

San Jose then managed only two more baserunners for the remainder of the night - a leadoff single from Jebavy in the top of the sixth and a two-out walk to Ross in the seventh. The final seven Giants hitters of the game were retired.

Knight (3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) kept the Rawhide off the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings allowing a total of just one hit over the three frames. Pat Young then worked around a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the seventh to keep the score at 8-6. Visalia though exploded for four runs in the bottom of the eighth against Young (1 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO) to break the game open. Reyes drew a leadoff walk before Taylor blooped a single into shallow left. Herum then hit a slow grounder back to Young, who threw wildly to second, in an effort to start a double play. The error allowed Reyes to score pushing the lead to 9-6. Young then walked Perez to load the bases and prompt another pitching change. Tyler Cyr (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) induced Castillo to ground into a force out at second, but Taylor came home on the play to make it 10-6. Dawel Lugo followed with an RBI groundout before Trahan delivered an RBI single for a 12-6 cushion. All four runs in the inning were charged to Young.

Solis (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching three-plus innings of long relief. He was charged with five runs (all earned) and eight hits. Diaz (2 IP), Cameron Gann (2 IP) and Will Locante (1 IP) combined for five scoreless innings of relief for the Rawhide to finish the game. Visalia starter Ethan Elias pitched just the first inning before he was removed from the contest.

Reyes (6-3) took the loss after surrendering a season-high eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out one.
