Lake County Captains News Release

(South Bend, IN) - The Lake County Captains fell for the second day in a row to the South Bend Cubs with an 8-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Four Winds Field. Lake County scratched across two runs on Cubs errors, but a three-run Cubs second inning and a five-run fourth sunk the Captains.

The Captains scored first when an error by Cubs second baseman Sutton Whiting allowed David Armendariz to score, but South Bend answered right back in the bottom of the second. South Bend loaded the bases with nobody out on a Captains error, a single and a walk. Whiting then hit a fielder's choice to knock in Josh Silver with the tying run. The Cubs took the lead when Captains starter Casey Shane threw away a pickoff attempt at first, allowing Hodges to score. Roberto Caro then gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead with an RBI single.

Shane (5-6) only lasted two innings, but the Cubs scored five more runs against the Lake County bullpen. In the fourth, the Cubs scored five runs on five hits against right-hander Jared Robinson. Eddy Martinez drove in three-runs with a bases-loaded double to give South Bend a 6-1 advantage. Eloy Jimenez later drove in a run with a double and Silver knocked in another with a single to add to the Cubs' lead and make it 8-1.

The Captains scored another run in the fifth, but that was all they could muster. Jose Medina led off with a double and scored when Hodges threw away a ground ball off the bat of Ordomar Valdez. Lake County put runners on first and second, but Martin Cervenka was robbed of a hit when his line drive was caught by Hodges at third to end the inning.

Ryan Kellogg earned the win for South Bend. Kellogg (3-4) pitched six frames and only gave up two unearned runs. The southpaw gave up five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two.

Shane allowed three runs, two earned, over his two innings of work and took the loss. The right-hander walked one and struck out one.

Lake County has lost two out of the first three to South Bend and will try to split the series on Thursday. The series finale gets underway at Four Winds Field at 7:05 p.m.
