SWB Game Notes

June 29, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The red-hot SWB RailRiders edged the Chiefs on Tuesday night, 6-4. The RailRiders posted their 16th win in 21 games for their sixth straight series win. The Chiefs never held a lead in the game.

ALL-STAR SPECTACULAR: Today four RailRiders were elected to the Triple-A All-Star Game that will be played July 13 in Charlotte. Catcher Gary Sanchez, outfielders Ben Gamel and Aaron Judge and pitcher Chad Green helped SWB lead the IL with four of the 13 elected players by vote of field managers and general managers, media ballots and online fan voting.

SLAM THE GAVEL: Judge paces the circuit with 16 home runs, including four in his last six games. He is tied for fourth with 46 RBIs and sits third with 31 extra-base hits, second in runs scored (49) and second with 140 total bases. Through 74 games with SWB, he owns a .266 batting average and a .490 slugging percentage. In the month of June, Judge has hit .337 through 26 games with nine homers, 21 RBIs, 19 walks and 22 strikeouts. His on-base percentage for the month is .462 and he carries a robust 1.156 OPS. He has a team-high six outfield assists.

I BELIEVE THE CATCHER IS OUR FUTURE: Sanchez is tied with Judge for fourth in the IL with a .490 slugging percentage. He is second on the team with eight homers and 32 RBIs. He owns a .280 average through 49 games and an .812 OPS. He had an impressive May, owning a .358 average in 16 games with nine extra-base hits and a .989 OPS. Yesterday, he and infielder Jorge Mateo of Adv.-A Tampa were named to the World roster for the upcoming Futures Game. When Sanchez catches, the RailRiders have gone 29-15 with a 2.64 ERA. With the team's other three backstops, the team has gone 18-17 with a 3.75 ERA. He leads all ranked IL catchers in caught-stealing efficiency at 39%.

IT'S EASY BEING GREEN: Green is coming off a scoreless outing at Syracuse on Monday. He has spun 17 consecutive shutout frames and owns the IL's lowest ERA at 1.54. Green also boasts the second-lowest WHIP (0.98). He has allowed 19 runs across 81.2 innings (14 starts) this season and has 82 strikeouts against 19 walks. His six victories pace the RailRiders. Green made his Major League debut on May 16 and has appeared in two games with New York.

LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: The 2015 IL Rookie of the Year, Gamel has followed an outstanding campaign with another strong season. Through 65 games, he has hit .293, tallied 18 extra-base hits and leads SWB with 12 stolen bases. Through 25 games in June, the Jacksonville, Fla., native has slashed .343/.425/.457/.882 with three triples and 12 RBIs.

AND THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE: Tyler Austin fell a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three of the RailRiders' runs last night. On Friday at Pawtucket, he slammed a career-best three big flies for the RailRiders, tying the SWB franchise record. He had eight doubles, four homers and 27 RBIs over 73 games played and 299 plate appearances with last year's RailRiders, slashing .235/.309/.311/.619. In 22 games and 92 plate appearances at Triple-A this season, he has 10 doubles, seven homers and 26 RBIs, slashing .317/.380/.695/1.076.

SIMPLY THE BEST: At 47-32 (.595), the RailRiders own the best record in Triple-A baseball. In fact, four of the six best records in Triple-A (and each of the top four in the IL) reside in the RailRiders' North Division. Rochester (46-33, .582) stands 1.0 game back of SWB and both Buffalo and Lehigh Valley (45-34, .570) are 2.0 games out. The Bisons, SWB's next foe starting tomorrow night, have won an MiLB-best eight straight games. Syracuse is the only squad in the six-team North that owns a losing record.

ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders own the IL's best road record at 26-14. They stand on pace to win 47 games away from NEPA. That would surpass the franchise record of 45 set by Marc Bombard's 2002 Red Barons who won 91 total games with players like Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd, Brett Myers and Joe Roa. At PNC Field, SWB has slashed .254/.315/.386/.701 while scoring 4.00 runs/game. On the road, the team has slashed .271/.344/.420/.764 while scoring 5.05 runs/game.
