Stockton Ports News Release

MODESTO, Calif. - For a second straight night, the Stockton Ports saw the Modesto Nuts bang their way to a lopsided victory. Modesto put up 17 hits and eight runs over the final two innings en route to a 10-4 win over the Ports at John Thurman Field and Modesto's first series victory since mid-May.

Stockton scored its first two runs in the second as they opened the inning with three straight hits off Nuts starter Yency Almonte. Joe Bennie opened the frame with a single, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Seth Brown and John Nogowski to give the Ports a 2-0 lead. Until the ninth inning, the Ports' four hits in the second were their only hits of the contest.

Almonte would be rendered a no-decision, going six innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.

Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs would give up his only two runs in the third. Emerson Jimenez started the inning with a single to right and scored on an ensuing triple by Omar Carrizales, one of two triples for Carrizales in a 5-for-5 performance on the night to give Modesto its first run. Forrest Wall tied the game with an ensuing sac-fly to center.

Friedrichs would also receive a no-decision, going six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits while not recording a strikeout and walking just his second batter of the season.

Victor Veliz (0-1) took over in the seventh for Stockton and would not see the end of the inning. Veliz' first pitch was hit to center field for a triple by Carrizales, who scored on an ensuing single by Wall to give Modesto a 3-2 lead. After Veliz picked up back-to-back strikeouts, Dom Nunez tripled to right-center to score Wall and Josh Fuentes singled to left to score Nunez and make it a 5-2 advantage for Modesto. Max White followed with a single, at which point Veliz was lifted for Corey Miller, who gave up a three-run homer to Colin Ferguson that gave Modesto an 8-2 cushion.

Veliz suffered the loss, going two-thirds of an inning and allowing five runs on five hits. Miller would pitch the eighth and give up a pair of runs. After allowing back-to-back singles to Carrizales and Wall to start the inning, Shane Hoelscher drove in a run with a sac-fly and Nunez provided an RBI single to center to make it a 10-2 Nuts advantage. Miller allowed three runs on four hits over an inning-and-a-third.

After a scoreless seventh from Major League rehabber Jake McGee and a scoreless eighth from Luis Niebla, Yoely Bello took over in the ninth and did not have an easy time closing the game out. Seth Brown started the inning with a single and scored two batters later on an RBI double by Iolana Akau. Akau scored on an ensuing single by Mikey White to make it 10-4. Stockton would go on to load the bases with two outs, but Bello would strike out B.J. Boyd looking to end the ballgame.

The Ports and Nuts wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field. Brett Graves (3-6, 5.58 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Parker French (3-5, 3.11 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
