McKenzie Dominates in Scrappers Win

(Niles, OH) - Triston McKenzie came into his third start of the season looking for his first win of the year. A solo homerun would be the only run that the Auburn Doubledays would score off McKenzie as the 2016 first round draft pick struck out eight and didn't walk a batter as he picked up his first win of the season as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers topped the Doubledays 9-5.

McKenzie sailed through the first six innings of the game with just the one blemish. In the top of the second inning, Tres Berrera would connect on a solo homerun to put Auburn up 1-0. It was the first earned run allowed this season by McKenzie.

Mahoning Valley would grab the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Silento Sayles and Gabriel Mejia each reached to start the inning, Erlin Cerda would singe to score Sayles to tie the game. Luke Wakamatsu followed with an RBI single to put the Scrappers ahead to stay. Jodd Carter added an RBI sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead.

The Scrappers would add four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Logan Ice, Gavin Collins and Nate Winfrey all walked to start the inning. After back to back strikeouts, Ice would score on a wild pitch. Cerda would then walk to load the bases once again. Wakamatsu would again connect on an RBI single before Carter would drive in two with an RBI single as well to put the Scrappers up 7-1.

Auburn would come charging back in the top of the seventh thanks to two Scrappers errors. With two outs Nick Banks singled to extend the inning. David Kerian would then reach on a fielding error. After Andres Martinez was hit by a pitch, another fielding error would allow Auburn to get two runs on the board. A double from Clayton Brandt would drive in two more to cut the Scrappers lead to 7-5.

In the bottom of the inning the Scrappers would get two runs back. Sayles would drive in a run with an RBI sacrifice fly while Gabriel Mejia would pick up an RBI on a fielder's choice that pushed the score out to the final of 9-5.

McKenzie (1-1) earned the win with 6.0 innings of work. He allowed just two hits and the lone run. He did not walk a batter and struck out eight. Tanner Tully would make his professional debut with 1.0 inning of relief work. He allowed two hits and four runs, but no earned runs. He did not walk a batter and did not record a strike out. Leandro Linares finished off the game with 2.0 innings of no hit relief. He walked one and struck out two.

The Scrappers (3-9) and Doubldays (7-5) will continue their series on Wednesday night. The Scrappers will again look for their first series win of the season as they send Juan Hillman (1-0) to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
