WINGNUTS HOLD OFF TEXAS

The Wichita Wingnuts opened their four-game series against the Texas AirHogs with a 5-4 win Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. It took just two batters into the home half of the first for Wichita to grab the lead. Christian Stringer was hit by the first pitch of the night from Texas starter Griffin Russell, and came around one batter later when Zack Cox doubled to left. The Wingnuts held that 1-0 lead until the third, when Cody Lenahan tied the game with a solo home run. Texas then took the lead in the next inning, on a two-out two-run double by Devon Rodriguez. Wichita answered in the home half, tying the game on an RBI double by Stringer, and Cox ground ball. With two down, Martin Medina delivered a two-run single, putting the Wingnuts back in front 5-3. The AirHogs pulled an unearned run back in the sixth, as Leon Byrd brought in Michael Miller who had reached on an error earlier in the innings. That was the final run on either side, as the Wingnuts bullpen was dominant in the late innings to seal Wichita's second straight one-run victory and improve their record to 4-1 against Texas.

WHAT A RELIEF

With starter Ryan Kussmaul taken out in the fifth inning last night, the Wichita bullpen was called upon to soak up the final four and a third innings. Chase Johnson was first out of the bullpen, and he struck out Brian Bistagne with two in scoring position and two outs in the fifth, keeping Texas from a bigger inning. The righty allowed an unearned run in the next frame before turning things over to Fabian Roman, who worked around a two-out single to post a zero in the seventh. Chad Nading pushed his streak of scoreless outings to nine in a row, setting the AirHogs down in order in the eighth, before Frankie Reed came on for the ninth. The southpaw allowed a one-out single, but he slammed the door from there to earn his eighth save, tying him with St Paul's Ryan Rodebaugh for the league lead. All told, the quartet allowed one unearned run in their four and a third frames of work, allowing three hits, zero walks, and collecting three strikeouts. The bullpen has been a huge part of the Wingnuts 17-7 record this month, as their collective ERA is 3.06 since the calendar turned over to June.
