Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

The Canadian Football League announced Tuesday that Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Simoni Lawrence has been named the Shaw CFL Top Performer for Week 1.

Lawrence played a key role in Hamilton's season-opening 42-20 win over the Toronto Argonauts on June 23 in the first-ever regular season CFL game at BMO Field. The 6-1, 228-pound native of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, registered seven defensive tackles, two quarterback sacks, one tackle for loss, one pass knock down, a fumble recovery and an interception that he returned 37 yards for his first-career CFL touchdown.

The reigning East Division Most Outstanding Defensive Player signed a contract extension with the Tiger-Cats on May 31, 2016 that will keep him in Hamilton through the 2017 CFL season. He was also named a CFL All-Star for the first time in his career in 2015, while adding Divisional All-Star honours for the second consecutive campaign. Lawrence contributed across the board for Hamilton's defence last season, starting in all 18 games at linebacker and recording career highs in defensive tackles (80) and sacks (5), while adding two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Ottawa's Trevor Harris and Chris Williams, second and third in voting, respectively, join Lawrence as this week's Shaw CFL Top Performers. The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
