Piron's Walk-Off Seals Win over Chukars

June 28, 2016 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

Jonathan Piron singled home Manny Melendez with 1-out in the 10th inning, giving the Grand Junction Rockies a 6-5 walk-off win over the Idaho Falls Chukars Monday night at Suplizio Field.

Piron's single drove in the Rockies first run since the first inning when they sent 10 to the plate and scored five runs. Piron brought home the first with a sacrifice fly, Hunter Melton did the same to bring in the second, and Luis Brito capped the inning with a 3-run homer, but the Rockies left two men on base in the inning, and 11 in the 8 innings that followed, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings.

Idaho Falls chipped away at the lead with back-to-back solo homers from Manny Olloque and Meibrys Viloria in the second. Ryan Dale brought home a run in the fourth, while Colton Frabasilio's sacrifice fly in the eighth made it a 1-run game. The Chukars left the tying run on base in the eighth inning, but scored the tying run in the ninth without hitting the ball out of the infield. All it took was two infield singles and a squeeze bunt to get the job done, but then they loaded the bases. JD Hammer kept the game tied with back-to-back strikeouts.

Colton Welker, Joel Diaz, and Jose Gomez finished with three hit nights for the Rockies, who improve to 6-4 on the season. Piron added a pair, extending his hit streak to 10 games.

Bryan Baker made his professional debut on the mound for Grand Junction and surrendered two runs in three innings. Ryan McCormick allowed a run in two frames, while Carlos Lopez gave up one in 2.2 innings. Hammer was tagged with the blown save even though the Chukars hit nothing hard off him, and Kenny Oakley faced the minimum in the tenth, earning the first win of his career.
