Huge Comeback Falls Just Short as Saints Fall 7-6 to Goldeyes

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints have the belief that no deficit is too big. On Monday night they nearly pulled off the most impressive comeback in many years as they trailed 7-0 after three innings, stormed back with five in the eighth, but came up a run short, losing 7-6 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at CHS Field in front of 7,737.

With the Saints trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the eighth and Goldeyes starter Kevin McGovern still on the mound and allowing just two hits up to that point, Willie Argo led off with an infield single to third. With one out Chad Christensen doubled to left which moved Argo to third. Maxx Garrett's grounder to short went under the glove of Mikael Gonzalez for an error and Argo scored to make it 7-2. Breland Almadova made it 7-3 with an RBI single to center. Tanner Vavra doubled down the left field line to score a pair of runs and make it 7-5. After Nate Hanson grounded out to third, Angelo Songco singled to left scoring Vavra and making it 7-6. Tony Thomas came through with a single to left, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but McGovern got Argo to strike out to end the inning. The Saints would go quietly in the ninth against Kyle Anderson.

The Saints dug a deep hole early as the Goldeyes scored five runs of their own in the second. Against starter John Straka, Jacob Rogers led off with a double and Casio Grider walked. A sacrifice moved the two runners up to second and third. Tanner Murphy's blooper to center scored Rogers to make it 1-0. Gonzalez' infield single to third scored Grider to make it 2-0. Wes Darvill loaded the bases with a single. A sacrifice fly by David Rohm made it 3-0. An RBI single by Josh Romanski and an RBI double from Reggie Abercrombie made it 5-0.

The Goldeyes scored a pair in the third when Ridge Hoopii-Haslam and Murphy walked with one out. Gonzalez singled to load the bases. After a strikeout to Darvill, Rohm singled to center driving home two to make it 7-0. Straka went 5.0 innings allowing seven runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out five.

Zac Westcott did a tremendous job out of the bullpen to keep the Saints in the game. He went 3.2 shutout innings allowing one hit.

The Saints got their first run in the sixth when Christensen reached on a three base error as Abercrombie had a fly ball go off his glove in right-center. Christensen would score on an Almadova groundout.

The Saints begin a three game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints are TBA while the Canaries send RHP Shawn Blackwell (3-3, 6.60) to the mound. The Saints celebrate Animal House presented by Weidner Apartment Homes. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities, and heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
