Dayton Dragons News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind.-Dayton pitchers Jacob Constante and Jesus Reyes combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-0 on Monday night. The win was the Dragons first of the second after four straight losses to South Bend.

Constante (3-7) earned the win, permitting just two runners past first base. He worked six innings, allowing all four Fort Wayne hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Reyes earned his first save, tossing the final three innings without surrendering a hit or walk. He struck out four.

The Dragons took the lead in the fifth inning when Luis Gonzalez reached on an infield single, went to second on a hit by Mitch Trees, and scored on a two-out single by Reydel Medina to make it 1-0. In the seventh, the Dragons scored again when James Vasquez walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a two-out single by Zack Shields to make it 2-0.

The Dragons enjoyed a big inning in the eighth to take command of the game. Shed Long walked with one out and Vasquez lined a two-out single to left to move Long to second. After Shane Mardirosian walked, Gonzalez hit a liner toward right-center. Fort Wayne center fielder Tyler Moore made a diving attempt at the catch but the ball skidded off his glove and all three runners scored on the double to make it 5-0 and close out the scoring.

The Dragons collected 10 hits, their highest total in a game since June 11. Medina and Gonzalez each had two. The Dragons had three extra base hits, all doubles by Shields, Gonzalez, and Brantley Bell.

The shutout victory was the Dragons fifth of the season. Their last two wins have in shutouts including a 1-0 decision over Great Lakes in the last game of the first half.

The Dragons (1-4, 22-53) battle the TinCaps (3-2, 39-36) on Tuesday night at 7:05 in the second game of the series. Ty Boyles (2-4, 5.33) will start for the Dragons against Fort Wayne's Thomas Dorminy (1-1, 3.20).

The next home game is Friday, July 1 when the Dragons host the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Field.

Notes: Jesus Reyes has emerged as one of the Dragons most reliable pitchers. He has not allowed a run over his last 11 innings, giving up only two hits during that time to earn a win and a save...The Dragons made several roster changes before the game. Pitchers Jacob Constante and Bernardo Moreta were activated from the disabled list. Pitcher Braulio Ortiz was placed on the disabled list. Outfielder Argenis Aldazoro was given his unconditional release.
