June 27, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
SALEM, Va. - Salem Red Sox left-handed pitcher Trey Ball was tabbed the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for June 20-26, the league announced on Monday. It is the first weekly honor for the fourth-year pro.
Ball was dominant in his lone outing of the week, tossing seven scoreless innings against the Frederick Keys on Sunday afternoon. In his last start as a 21-year-old, Ball surrendered just two hits, a bunt single and a soft flare to right field, while walking two and striking out six. The outing was his third of seven innings this season, all of which are tied for his longest outing as a pro.
The native of New Castle, Indiana, who turned 22 on Monday, has logged seven scoreless innings twice in a start this year, also accomplishing the feat on May 16 vs Wilmington. Ball has been dominant over his last three starts, all victories. In those three wins, he has allowed only two earned runs in 19.1 innings pitched for a 0.93 ERA.
Now in his second season with Salem, Ball is 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA in 11 starts. Over 59 innings, he has allowed just 15 earned runs on 46 hits, racking up 38 strikeouts and 29 walks. His .220 opponent batting average ranks third among Carolina League qualifiers while the 2.29 ERA is good for fourth in the circuit, but third-best among those still playing in the league.
Ball was drafted by Boston in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2013 draft out of New Castle Chrysler High School in Indiana. He bypassed a scholarship offer to the University of Texas to sign with Boston, earning a reported $2.75 million signing bonus. He is currently ranked as the number 17 prospect in the organization by Baseball America and the number 18 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com.
The Red Sox open up a three-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans tonight at LewisGale Field at 7:05 pm. Tickets are available at www.salemsox.com or by calling (540) 389-3333.
